Default 2T-G Temp gauge issues (hopefully...)

    Hey guys,

A slight issue has come up. Running a 2TG in my TA22. Over the last week, the temp gauge has either been not working, or (hopefully) reading highly inaccurate.

For example, last night, started it up, cold night, about 10pm, let it warm up with the choke on for a little while then continued to drive home. By the time I had been driving for about 2 mins, the temp gauge was the the red zone (can't remember the temps on it) so I pulled over and everything seemed okay.

Radiator is topped up, thermo fan working, etc. Engine bay didn't seem hot, cam cover seemed normal, oil is topped up, etc

The rest of the time it's either not been working or it's risen up and down but still more around the 40-60 deg mark instead of the normal 80ish it's usually at!

What else should I check. I did a quick search and it revealed that the thermostat may need replacing??

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Cheers,
    Al

check the wiring between the temp gauge and the temp sensor -
ground the temp sensor cable and watch the temp gauge needle go up, if you disconnect it from the motor the needle should go down.

Check the temp sensor with a known good sensor, or let motor idle for 5 -10 minutes, drain a bit of coolant out the bottom of the radiator and measure with a thermometer. compare with your temp gauge.

Check the thermostat by removing it and placing it on a bucket of boiling water, it should open fully.

Ok, checked the thermostat, and replaced (it was old looking but still working).

I can be driving and the temp guage will not move, then it rises up to normal temp, then back down to the off position. It usually happens just after high revs. Then whilst driving normally it'll go back down...

I also grounded the temp wire and the guage went up, then back down after I disconnected it..

Has anyone got any other suggestions?

Try the multiplug (blue, white and black sections) which connects the engine bay and dash harness'. Its above and to the rhs of the steering column.

Quite often get loose connections in there. I get intermittent similar issues with the oil pressure guage. Just a case of undoing and re-fastening the connector.

Cheers mate, I'll check it this arv!

*edit, checked for the multiplug, couldn't see what you were talking about... Having said that it might be deleted or something when the engine was replace?

I will go over the wiring when it's light tomorrow.

    Thanks for your suggestion!
