Have you quoted for the mv auto box? (i.e. was the person telling you thec4/c9 is cheaper the same person trying to sell one to you?)
How is the car used? Could you live with it being manualised?
hello peoples.
ok i have been given a few options on a new auto.
and i like this idea.
Spoke to Dellow Autos and they make the custom bellhousing to suit the 1JZ to
Ford C4 and C9. Quite Cheap aswell.
All it needs is a custom convertor to suit. They reffered me to Dominator Convertors.
Call dominaot up and have a yak with jason.
He will supply either box build for 400 rwkw.
Heavy duty with custom convertor for 3500 stall and fully manulised.
seems all to easy.
The ford is manualised. so it wont use an ecu to control it. just a kickdown. i have piggybacked the toyota factory ecu to the adaptronic to run the factort A3040E auto , Factory box needs TPS and MAP signal etc.
This means i can piss all this electronic stuff off... nice.
All i need then is to mod trans crossmember and have the tail shaft modified.
Not a massive drama there... quite capable of doing that myself.
oh i need to fit a B&M or Hurst Shifter aswell.
Question time......
who has done this?
It seems like a decent conversion.
but is it bad to go backwards to an older Ford box?
Told its a lot cheaper and a lot stronger than rebuilding the factory Toyota box to accomodate the power.
- all in all i have to decide to Go the Ford conversion or Go the MV autos box.
any insight to pit falls and problems , Pros and Cons would be much appreciated.
Being here in tassie makes it hard as no one has really played with this sort of thing.
cheers guys.

yeah mike has given me quotes on several of the boxes he can offer.
the Ford conversion is considerably cheaper it seems... waiting on a firm quote.
but i quoted the price that mike gave for his box (not saying the company name)
and the guys doing the Ford box said it would be well under that.
Just got in contact with some local guys just them who also think they can do it cheaper again for the same Converted box.
Car will be used for Drags and some street driving on my days off. Just to take out for drive.
i have another car for daily driving.
cheers

Is it still cheaper if you take into account the conversion costs? i.e. gearbox + convertor + shifter + bellhousing + trans mount + tailshaft?
Im thinking the ford box is probably the way to go, (it should have heaps more aftermarket support which makes it cheaper if it breaks or need replacement) and being mainly a drag car any difference in driveability would be a moot point.

yeah this is what im weighing up 7M
both quotes will include the convertor.
both options i have to purchase a donor box as i lunched my 1JZ stock one.
(have got a second hand 2J NA box already if i stay toyota that cost me less than a carton)
The Ford box i will need if i got that way is gunna be quite cheap and easy to come by ... due to popularity ... quite a few around and not really that sought after.
Bell housing was really cheap thru dellow aswell. was quite suprised at the price... let alone they make one to suit the conversion. its a shelf item.
Trans mount i can do myself and wont cost me much.
And i have a contact for the tailshaft. prop just upgrade to the 3 inch AU falcon one piece which i have here already for the day this exercise came about. only a couple of hundred to make it fit. was gunna happen with either box.
Just been told that the aftermarket shifter is easier and cheaper with the ford box rather than adding one to the toyota box. i was gunna do this with either box anyhow as i hate the stock shifter and set up... would like to use the ratchet type setup.
to the other comment u made. i agree and so does most ive talked to ... replacement box being the ford item is gunna be easier to come by , parts are cheaper , more aftermarket range , and a lot easier to upgrade. and apparently not being a full electronic style trans like the toyota ..... there is a lot less that can go wrong with the ford trans. food for though there. lol
so IMHO your dead right there.

Check that you odnt have to rape the firewall/trans tunnel because of the Dellend housing.

cheers takai ..... didnt even think of that. well thought out by u !
ringing now for measurements.
was told in size the Ford box was smaller and shorter.
not taking a risk though.
cheers mate!

Most supra guys go Turbo 400 so that is an option as well.
You know the older gm/ford boxes don't have OD right? But with 3.9:1 gears in a Cressida with 26"ish tall tyres still should be fine for street use.
Does the custom converter mean that you can use the stock 1jz flex plate and it will have the output to the ford spline? If so, that is pretty good if you can get a good price on a converter. I had looked into the TH400 swap before but got a bit stuck with flex plate adaptors so that you are able to use a stock th400 converter as apparently these are a fair bit cheaper.

hey chris!
(darkagent of BC.com)
yeah the convertor runs the stock JZ flex plate with the ouput to the C series ford splines.
No one has even mentioned the TH400 box. and ive spoken to a fair few builders gathering opinions and quotes. not tyre kicking .... just shopping around.
You have got me thinking again now.
can u ut me onto any of the guys using the TH400? id love to have a chat to them and get the pro's and con's on that box also.
The box the guys on the mainland were gunna use was i 4 speed i was told. will ask again via email though.
it wont be doing much highway driving so there prob isnt much need for an over drive really.
tassie doesnt have many roads long enough rofl. to many dam corners! not thats a bad thing.
But the guys told me that it would be built to suit a ratio good enough to be nice enough on the street and to get good enough MPH to run quick times on the quarter mile. we were talking in to the tens max. which gives me some room to go faster later on. im looking in the 11's/12's and after a while i wanna aim for 10's.
gunna learn to crawl first....... but have the goods to walk (Run) when the time comes.
hope that makes sense.
cheers for the help there!

stick with the toyota box if thats what your goals are.
honestly, there is no way a quality built c4 is going to be cheaper then a toyo box from mike, a decent c4 by the time you get it built get a bell housing and converter you wont get much chnage from 5500.
321CYA aka joey had a c4 that was cheaper then my toyo box, he had it rebuilt 4 times and i was still on my toyo box going strong.
stick with mike, he knows his shit.

hey shane ....
the quote for the C4 wasnt from mike and ive decided on going local with a C-9 built box manualised.
the bell housing was under under 500 inc.
Ive been quoted just over half of that (price u quoted for a C-4) for the built C-9. manualised with custom convertor for 3400 stall.
add 500 for a bell housing . and the rest of the work i will do myself with help from mates who are qualified.... welders... fitters etc. that means mounts and tailshaft inc custom cooler lines.
and im ot paying any labour on anything but building the box etc. i remove ... install myself with a best mate whos a quality mechanic.
u run GM race glide i read? im thinking hugo built that?
top bloke and also got a quote.
but its a little to hardcore for what i want.
mike is awesome i agree. top bloke. never asked him about the C-4 conversion though.
but my quote comes locally which took me a lot of looking for the person to do it.
and he has built many 7,8 second cars with the same box. bigger specs though .... he is gunna build mine for my requirements.
thanks for the feedback .......
can i ask what power joey was running and with what ? who built the box? and what were the dramas?
PM me shane.
cheers

mike built my powerglide, and organised a matching converter. he has many customers in thailand running PG behind 2js so he had lots of data for the converter. and he has always doen good by me so i stuck with him and most likely always will.
the only person i would get a c4 or c9 built by is als race glides, who put a lifetime guarantee behind there boxes, Al said 3 years ago that the c4 and c9 wont hold 2j power and hence why i didnt go that route,
im more than happy with my PG, its not overly street friendly but it isnt registered anymore so its not a prob.
joey has a 67mm ish turbo so enough for 600rwhp, i cant recall him going anymore than about 350rwhp witht the c4, it was uilt in newcastle somewhere for around $4000 originally, it was then a further $2000 each time it got fixed, it would have been lucky to do 5000 k's in total and it never was raced with it. he got rid of it and went to a r154

I bought a Dellow C4 bellhousing a few years ago for my 1J. Its been bolted to my engine and used for a trial fitment in my Ra23 but thats about as far as I got. The bellhousing itself seems like a decent quality piece of cast alloy. The ford C4 gearbox is quite compact, definately smaller in all areas than the a340, which could be useful for some conversions. Let me know if your interested in it as I want to offload it. I also have a C4 in unknown condition.

hey pube ..
cheers for the info.
yeah ill take it .... PM me a price and we will tee it up.
i only need the bell housing though ....
just got a C-9 box thats gunna be built up.
im led to believe the C-9 and C-4 have the same bolt pattern for the bellhousing.
can anyone confirm? will call around tomorrow to check up.
