grinding when accelerating? is that what you mean?
if so does it pop out of gear?
or is it grinding when you shift gears 3rd to 4th, etc?
if it is shifting, then syncros... if it is poping out of gear, i believe that is worn gears
cheers
my corona has the original gearbox "W55" from factory and has been grinding in four and fith when load is applyed. All other gears are fine. Could this be a imputshaft bearing problem or syncros? If i need a new gear box would w58 be a better option as i want to increase acceleration. My second option was to stick with the w55 and get 4:11 diff instead of my 3:9.

Every W5x box I have come across regardless of how good the condition is has made a rumbling noise under decel to some extent, some under load, most only in 4th, some in 4th and 5th.
None of them ever died though.
My current one is pretty loud under hard decel at the track in 3rd and particularly 4th. Barely a noise out of it on the street though.
I just put it down to excessive thrust movement.
I'm sure a rebuild will fix it, another second hand box is a gamble, maybe it'll be good, maybe it won't. In my experience it won't be perfect.
