    Default Turbo 'Bags'

There was an inconclusive thread on the old forums on this very topic, but im going to ask the same question again for discussion purposes.

What are peoples opinons upon the bags.

They reduce under bonnet temps and trap heat within the turbine, hopefully to reduce lag and create more power.

The issue that i am worried about is, once the motor is turned off, will the bag 'superheat' the turbo, burn the oil and destroy bearings?

Will the bag effect a ball bearing and standard bearing turbo differently?

i wouldn't use one, i'd rather use a few heat shields where needed.

i wouldnt use one either as stated a few heat shields work just as well and dont have to worry about the raised questions. ive seen no difference in spool time weather the turbo is coolish or has been running 18psi for long bursts.

Problem is Glenn doesn't have a whole lotta room where his turbo sits, heat shields arn't really an option.

I've heard 2 stories of heatbags destroying relatively new turbo's, but with a device like a turbo you could never blame the bag for sure.

I can't see it would trap an awful lot more heat that the big fuckoff lump of steel that is your exhaust housing.
    Is it ceramic coated yet?

I wouldn't bother with the bag mr dong... just run with the ceramic coating you were going to do.
Your turbo shouldn't be running too high in it's efficiency range anyway.

i dont like turbo bags !!!! I think they cook the oil and retain too much heat.

I have nevr used a bag but used to have my manifold/ turbine heat wrapped. This caused the turbine housing to glow red and caused turbo failure shortly after.( on a long drive through the hills)

It is said that retaining heat in the turbine provides more power ( heat is energy= power)
but i dont no? ever since the turbo faliure i have changed my views on this subject and now leave my housing to open air!
Is this robbing me of a few hp? I dont care i would rather my turbo in one piece!

In drag racing it would prob be of advantage to have a bag BUT they shut their engines down after 7-14 sec. so the engine/ turbine doesnt get a whole lot of time to heat soak and start doing damage.
On the street diff story with the turbine housing be subjected to heat for far greater periods and causing probs?

Black supra: you can actually have heat shields made from the same stuff they make the bags from. They make good options as they are flexible and able to be put in the smallest of areas!

i have used one for 2 years, never had a problem, i would never not use one they are awesome, i too had little room so i used a bag and some sheilding i could fit.

i would suggest talking to gcg or an industry professional instead of asking a forum of people who most liely are going on what they heard of a mates mates cousins uncles nephew.

in my opinion glenn from first hand experience, use one.

    Heya,

Like Shane, i have been running one for a few years now. originally got it to prevent paint burn on the bonnet, it was too hot too touch.

with the bag, you can actually touch the bag briefly without dramas.

they are pretty open at the ends so heat still gets out, but my engine bay is noticably cooler.

i have had no turbo probs (and my turbo is only oil cooled) but i dont do alot of km's lately either.

from my experience i also would recomend it.

    Cheers
    Stew

Like anything, every body is running different setups with different turbo's. I have used a turbo bag on a GT30R and it did not last to long, not sure if it was the bag! I am using the same bag on a t25g on my 20v and it seems fiine, as the turbo bag was for a bigger turbo there was a lot of room for hot air to excape.

I have one but haven't used it enought to comment. I think I started the thread on the old forums too

For a circuit racing car, I probably wouldn't get one.
For a drag car, I would definitely get one.
For a street car, depends on your driving style. I just putt around 99% of the time so I am not worried.

Also, there is no way a heat shield has the same effect as a turbo bag for under bonnet cooling and protecting close by things. You can give your car a flogging come back, open bonnet and put hand on turbo. No way you could do that with a heat shield!

I used to use one on my old turbo. I wouldn't recommend one to anyone. They don’t let heat dissipate from the turbo and will cause extreme internal temperatures for longed than necessary even when the turbo is not under constant load. I've gone back to a heat shield to protect my paintwork but also lets the turbo housing breath.
