glad u dug it up so i didnt have to!
Anyone with the experience. do u think custom headers will clear the steering box okay?
Sorry to drag back an old thread.
Barned01 - I swapped an MX62 sway bar on to my RA23 on the weekend and found that the back of the MX62 bar is 25mm further forward than the back of the RA23 bar.
Hope this helps you.
Mitch.

hahaha, maybe, but it certainly wouldn't be a good design by any stretch!Originally Posted by jeffro ra28
you CAN tilt the motor, the crown V*'s are tilted factory for this reason, but whether there's enough room after/to do that i don't know.
i'm having the same issue with my mx22, i've pissed off the 'box already, and i got a VB commodore rack that i'm wangling in. i should get power steering though (and maybe something NOT holden...)

so rather awkward set of headers then.... Would you think some firewall bashing would help the cause?
whoops double post!
um, no firewall beating won't really help, cuz you've still gotta get past the steering box first, and the manifold is already hard up against the engine.
here's a pic of what i mean!(minus box, cuz the engine simply wouldn't sit in there with it in)

Thanks, that is extremely helpfull!
Would you be able to modify the std headers from the 4th cyl back and run the collector down in between the steering arms.
Have u got the camera handy? a top veiw would be super!
Thinking of this, any engine bay pics would be awesome!
I suppose i am just going to have to cross this bridge when it comes. Id like power steering rack but i am lacking this kind of experience to be able to do it properly.
top view of what? engine or headers? i've got both. i've got a fair few pics.
you prob could mod the standard ones but it's a bit of stuufing round, and i'm gonna make a new shit design that'll flow marginally better that'll fit nicer in there with more clearance.
i've been fudging around with designs of this on autocad, i'll post a pic when i've finished the 'final' version that i'll make. it's not tuned length at all but would have to flow better than the silly standard ones for sure.

just a total top veiw of the engine in the bay would be wonderful, also one focusing on the steering box from the top with engine in there. Watever you've got really anything helps!
there is no way you can fit a 1UZ, even with crown log style headers, in an RA28 without converting to rack and pinion. the crown headers are essentially a 2" pipe running directly along the manifold, they're squashed on the driver side to clear the steering box, and there's more left-to-right room in the UZS131 than in the RA28..
unless you want to mount the engine at 10 degrees tilt to the passenger side (hello sump and bellhousing issues!), there's just no way you can achieve this. even then, you would be pushing it to allow enough room to fit the passenger side headers in.
rack and pinion is a must for this conversion. check with sheepers in the classic celica thread. he has an RA28 with R&P conversion from a corona (i think T142?? can't remember exactly)

sorry about the bad pics.. can you see the steering box down there?Originally Posted by jeffro ra28

you can see how tight the whole conversion is here...
that's a huuuuuge bitch
edit - sorry if i misread your question. are you looking for info on 1UZ -> RA23/28 like the thread title suggests or 1UZ -> MX22?
oh yeah as fuzz has shown in that second pic, the 1uz is actually pretty long with all it'ss shit on the front, and having a small tranny tunnel doesn't help, my auto is already touching the tunnel, and the engine really needs to go back 1-2" more, so i'll have even more fun getting the exhaust in when the chassis gets that bit closer. as it is, i have to pull the motor completely out if i wanna do anything like changing a head gasket etc, there's no room to get the manifolds off to lift the heads off.

Ok thanks peoples!.
Wanting a ra28 1uz!
Looks like R & P is a must then!
That aside. has anyone weighed these engines? Would you compare it to say a 6 cylinder long motor or v8 holden/ford/chev?
lighter than a 4M, that's for sure. supposedly weighs about 175kg, tranny would be 40-45kg. meanwhile the 4M is about 215-220kg by itself.
