i started moving it by hitting the end of the shaft with a sledge hammer. it has fucked the thread of course but its only the old 4 stud axle.
i think the problem is that the bushes are absorbing all the hits with the slide hammer
im having dramas getting the rear hub out of the MA61 so i can put the MS123 hubback in.
ive got the worlds biggest slide hammer using a MX83 diff housing as a sliding weight. 2 big handles to hang onto with about 250mm slide travel. there would be a stupid amount of force each time i strike it yet it hasnt moved at all![]()
is there any other tips to getting them out?? im getting a sore neck/back im hitting it that hard.
here is my slide hammer

hello
I belted the fuck out of mine like you are now, that got them out.
Fucked the thread up obviously, but I cared not.
A press is the proper way, I'm not a huge fan of slide hammers.

I had someone place a brass shaft (or soft steel rod) through the hole in the old 4 stud hub
face resting on the swing arm housing backed up by a sledgie so that when you belt the shaft it will transfer the shock through to the sledgie and not bounce the swing arm on it's rubber bushes.
To save the thread (I removed my 5 studders to fit longer studs)
Use the 2 thick washers, tighten nut, place socket on nut with a piece of steel pipe,
duct taped to hold it in place then bash the pipe, check between bashings that nut is tight so that you are not transferring force via thread.
I outsourced this job to someone with a press, for reasons which are now clear to you.
BTW that's the awesomest slide hammer ever!

live axle axles come out in 2 slides
you can also see it bending that 10mm plate welded in the rim
its all out now.... great fun that was
hello
Yep, been there before...! Can be a real PITA!
I've done them both ways, press and slide hammer...and to be honest my preference is for the slide hammer method!
And I have what must be one of the smaller slide hammers in the world! :S
Good to hear you got them out tho!
Cheers

Slick, nice pic!
Rusted/corroded from the factory? Rebuilt without lube, dry with sweat & fingerprints?
Thanks!
Dr Ed told me sledgehammer, so i pussied out and got it pressed out.![]()
Ok to resurrect this, ive done the MA61 ones with the press, but the MS123 ones are a bit more of a pain. Maybe i need a bigger slide hammer... or maybe thye are just a pain in the arse.
Any better ways to do it yet?

Do that slide hammer with the MA70 diff carrier you got.

nah i found slide hammer was shit.
best way i found:
get biggest sledge hammer available, screw on a sacrificial nut about 3/4.
get another sledge hammer and secure it against the trailing arm somewhere (caliper bracket maybe)
proceed to belt the end of the stub axle.
the only way to move it is with a large impact from a big mass!
or a press
hello
I just use a large spike and small sledge on the rear of the stub. Works every time. Never had issues.

I used that method to remove the MZ10 stubs (albeit a much smaller hammer)
And it completely fucked the threads, I cared not however as they were going in the bin.
