Default MA61 wheel nuts - what is the shank diameter?

Ok im in a bit of a pickle...

I'm getting my Volvo diff converted for my KE70, and I bought axles that were already welded and redrilled for 4x114.3mm PCD.
I am going to use MA61 wheels.

HOWEVER, they have been drilled to suit a Volvo stud, which is totally unique with a stud knurl diameter of 16.2mm.
MA61 wheel studs have a knurl diam of 14.1mm.
Furthermore, the volvo studs have a 1/2" thread, versus the M12x1.5 thread of the MA61 studs.

I've scoured the Nice Products catalogue, and there is nothing else I can use other than a Volvo wheel stud. Now starts my minor problem.

Cos i am using MA61 wheels, i need to get some shank nuts, but with a 1/2" thread instead of M12x1.5. The bloody Nice Products catalogue of course does not list the MA61 as having shank nuts, so I cant tell which shank nut is correct.
There are a few to chose from, with differing shank lengths and diameters, and most have a 1/2" thread option.

My problem is, I dont have an original MA61 shank nut (wheel nut) to measure.
I tried to measure the wheels, but my verniers dont fit inside the wheel circumfrence.... all i could measure what that the wheel is about 15mm thick at the wheel stud.
I had some random shank nuts that measure around 17mm diameter, but these were a little floppy inside the wheels.

Most shank nuts in the Nice Products catalogue are 17.1mm diameter, with a 19mm shank length, and come with a 3.8mm thick washer (19 minus 3.8 = 15.2mm).

Is this the right shank nut?

    HALP.

Remove said camp '61 wheels, insert nice normal wheels that take tapered nuts, problem solvered Mr Witzman

Do you have a large drill bit set so you can at least get an indication of what the rim hole diameter is to the nearest 0.5mm? If there are only so many options for shanked nuts available, then a match must be able to be found in the Niceparts cattledog?

ahhhh, the joy of abstract conversions I've just been through it all with Commodore diff in mine also.

Come to think of it as my mind rolls on with the topic.... why doesn't Niceparts or similar companys make a tapered seat conversion for oldschool shanked rims? All it would take is a press-fit steel insert, that fits neatly inside the rim hole, with an inside diameter of 12.5 or 13.0mm to suit M12 & 1/2" studs, and a tapered seat with flange to match the original washer diameter? Or is that just too logical when you can still buy shitty shanked nuts anyway..

Holden had a similar arrangement on alloy wheels around the early 90's, with a tapered steel insert. Maybe they just didn't trust the quality of their alloy and thought the tapered nuts might split them at the hole

i thought about the drill bits... but the largest i have is 12mm.
... no wait - i have a step drill, with 1mm increments from 12-20mm. That will get me close enough.

Yeah changing wheels would be nice - but not going to happen, unless someone donates me a set of wheels. Im working to a tight budget on this car, and wheels are on the list of "not essential for fasts" parts. Eventually i will get better wheels that take tapered nuts, but for now the MA61s will look tough enough and they were only $250 with tyres.

    Thanks for the suggestions
    Obscure conversions are indeed ghey.

Pretty much all Toyota's I've played with have the same shank nut.

    Celsior, Cressida, Supra, Celica, Soarer.

NFI on the shank, I'm not at home.

If I had to take a punt, it would be the M3LOCK

lol... have fun finding which STANDARD nut is equivalent to the M3LOCK (which is a lock nut).

The M3LOCK has a 17mm shank shaft length, which with a 3.8mm washer is perfect. All the normal shank nuts however have a shank shaft length of 19mm. (pages 140-143)

    Retardation?

Just measured a MA61 wheel nut.

~18.35mm OD where it sits in the rim.

    You need Z2LOCK?

nope.... the correct wheel nut will therefore be: NN362C

    see here - http://www.niceproducts.com.au/catal...el-Nuts-11.png

However, that helps me NONE. I need that nut with a 1/2" thread, not M12x1.5.

I guess i'll just have to use T235, or something similar

Have you managed to measure the ID of the hole on the rim?

    T246 might work, 0.3mm isn't much.

the factory studs would be too short for this idea, only giving you 2 or 3 threads for nut tightening. this would not be enough, safety wise..
buy 8 T246's take 2 bare rims to a machinist give him the wheel nuts and say "i want these to go into those holes please"
i just noticed the 25mm depth on those nuts. will these exceed the rim hole depth? measure first..

True true... but it seems in Witzman's case that longer studs would be easier to source than hybrid nuts

the other option is using some ARP race stud kits..... they have a knurl diameter even BIGGER than that the volvo studs.... but i digress.

frostys - the wheel hole depth is around 15mm, so the massively long T246 wont work, unless i cut them down by machinist... which is what i might have to do.

    I'll get there. Eventually.
