Yes the 2JZ-GE-W58 bell housing will mount up perfectly to the 1JZ. But your better off at least getting an R154.
Hi all i have whats probably a stupid question but i'm gonna ask anyway...is it possible to mate a W-series box or similar (ie. CHEAP) to the 1J? I know good cond.R154's are fairly rare and i'm way too poor to get a GETRAG...any help greatly appreciated

What if i was only chasing 200-220kw-atw and find a clutch that isn't too harsh??
how strong are these boxes? i've seen them behind nuts rotors n gay commo's!
It'll work but for how long is the question. I have put one behind a 1jz in my ra28 but I'm anticipating thats going to break after awhile. I guess as long as your nice to it its going to last awhile.
If you can fit an r154 in then just wait, save the extra cash needed and go that way. I've also got a friend who's been through a few w58s in a v8 commodore. Its the torque that kills them.

I have one Behind my 1JZ VVTi with BPU. Its given me no reason to doubt it yet.
That being said its always in the back of your mind when is it going to break and i keep a spare on hand.
w58's have lasted hundreds of thousands of kms behind 1JZ's it will be fine

Dont do it! Honestly, the R154 pays for its self. I regret trying to save money by using a w58 (5 to be exact), there are heaps of R154s out there, you just have to look for them. Once you install an R154 keep it regularly serviced (i used redline oil) and you wont have an issue. Also, youur clutch options dramatically improve. Just my 5c but, i dont want to see someone else go through the crap i did.
Thanks a lot for the useful tip. But could you explain in more precise why do you think it's not adviseable to use W58 gearbox ?? Franksly I only use it for street driving. I am not the type who like circuit racing or drag.Originally Posted by andyjz

From what i was told by the mechanic who kept replacing the box, it had something to do with the fact the the W58 was just too small to deal with the torque causing the actual casing to flex (mind you i had a gt35r), the fact that your 'current horsepower is around 220kW' indicates that future mods are on the cards.

While the R154 is regarded as a little notchy compared to the W58, all it takes is one spirited drive to do big damage to the W58, even with 220kW. R154 is really the safest way to go.
I hope this helps.
W58's in light car's on the other hand are fine![]()

What flywheel, clutch and pressure plate combo suits this setup? or just stick with the original 2j gear?Originally Posted by Nat
generally HD clutch and uprated PP will make things happier. keeping a full-face clutch will also reduce the shock loading on the gbox, so you're less likely to break its p00 hymen.
