    Default Solex rebuilding - sealant?

    Hi,
Have a simple question about rebuilding solex carbs.

I have a couple here and have taken some parts off them and most of the gaskets have had sealant on the gaskets.

Do I need sealant when rebuilding? I would suspect not but......

If so then which sealant is the best?
    Cheers
    Nathan

My experience is that no sealant is used. People use sealant because they can't wait for the gasket to be delivered or the gasket itself is not a spare part and you have to buy a full kit for enormous amounts of money.

I used to make gaskets by putting the old one on a photocopier and running some thick paper through the manual feed.

    Hi,

    Agreed.

Yuo do not need sealant. Clean up the metal surfaces, but not with anyhting abrasive. That Double-D Eucalyptus oil you get from chemists and Woolies/Coles is good for dissolving away bits of stuck sealant. Use a soft cloth and rub it on.

Once cleaned up, purchase the proper gasket set and re-assemble according to the manual. While you got the carbs apart it is good to check the jets and floats.

If you search in these forums for "Solex" (in the tech section) you will find a few threads here that show what to do.

Also are you going to rebuild it your self or are you getting a carby guy to do it ?

If you are doing it make sure that you check that all mating surfaces of the carby body are flat & not warped from being over tightened ... Also check the butterfly shafts for wear, crack open the throttle slightly & push & pull the shaft lingages in a up & down motion & look / feel for movement .. If the movement is minute' i wouldn't worry, but if its noticeable they will need to be rebushed ..

    Thanks everyone,
Will try to rebuild myself. I have kits and a couple for spares. Shouldn't be a drama!
    I hope!!
