yeah doesnt sound like a spun bearing. still, sounds something bottom end related
Is yours a 20V by any chance? I've heard ST's sound 'similar' to that with noisy tappets
I have been pruned by old man river!!!!!
nah mate stock 16v bigport sigh cheers for the help guys any more info would be appreciated
I'd like to give a little more information on what's going on.
The morning after a night of spirited driving, the motor gives a rattling noise as heard in the video. Before the motor was switched off, it was running perfectly normal (we think).
The rattling noise is heard very loud at idle, but once you start to rev it up, the noise will start to go away. The noise is softer than what it was at idle but it's still there.
We've taken off the cam covers and everything seems normal. Looked at pistons through spark plug holes and everything seems normal.
What I did find strange was when we were turning the crank over by hand (plugs removed). With the gearbox in neutral and clutch not depressed, the motor would turn over really rough. Smooth one stage of the turn and then up and down (soft hard soft hard).
As soon as we depress the clutch, turning the crank again the motion would be smooth like a normal motor. Could it possibly be something to do with the clutch alignment or flywheel?
When reinstalling the plugs and starting the car up again, we tried to clutch pressed in and released, the sound was like normal with the clutch out (noisy), but when we depressed it, it went soft again as if we revved it up.
Any ideas with what could be going on? I personally think there's something wrong in the bottom end as well, but why was it so out of the blue? There was still oil on the dip stick so it wasn't as if we were running the motor dry either.
Edit: Motor has been converted to rear wheel drive, but I don't think this matters much.
Sounds like a clutch/gearbox problem...

hmmmmm, for the minimal time it takes to swap in another T50... it might be worth it to see whats what.........
Information is POWER... learn the facts!!
no 4AGE has tappets mate......Originally Posted by Dimmy

But its doesnt sound like a nice noise at all! very strange how it acts with clutch in/out etc.
good luck working it out mate.

The motor is run in the rear wheel drive platform and is running a T50 behind it.![]()
We'll be removing the gearbox first thing to see what's going on around the clutch area. Fingers crossed it's just something loose.
Edit: The video was just an example of the sound we're getting from our motor. The rattle seems to go 'away' once we rev it up and then go louder at idle.
did you use a spigot bearing in the crank when you did the conversion?
if not possibly input shaft bearing.. soon to be a snapped input shaft..
dimmy said a sound "similar" to noisy tappets... not that it was noisey tappets....Originally Posted by sprinter86

that noise common to the 20v is a shagged VVT pulley![]()
