Plenty of decent old sedans in that price range, depends what you want from it and if you'll be modding..

I'd be inclined to look at an old 90-95 BMW 535is (manual, 0-100 7.3) or even an auto one and convert it to 2jz goodness. Well appointed, comfortable, plenty of boot space, excellent brakes for its age and plenty of aftermarket support.

Though cressy with 1j/2j or 1u has always intrigued me, i'd now do it to an e34 touring and have twin E34's in the garage.

Happy to show you mine if you come to the next toymods meet, Yian has one too.

But, keeping to toyota's will likely be easier to get supportive knowledge from here

I'm glad you said "fun' and "sleeper" not "cool" because neither coronas, nor holden v6s, are cool.

Lots of things cool about Coronas.

    Mainly when they are MarkIIs

Cool is very subjective, and I wouldn't have ever though a Corona wagon was going to be cool..but then... some wheels... some lowering.. and voila!

What about an RT132/RT133 like my daily? RWD, Four doors, Hatchback, reasonable sized boot, RWD, some half-decent luxury touches inside like velour trim, good instumentation, adjustable steeing coloumn, lumbar support and height adjust on the drivers seat.

    Fit 1GGTE and surprise everyone.

IMHO best practical fun car would be a subaru L series with a later ej20-22-25 fitted. heaps of space, cheap easily available parts, handles ok ( especially in RWD mode )
you can get one with these mods for around 5 grands, which'l be quicker than a new bommodre or falcon without using to much fuel- from my understanding for engineering you gotta swap the rear drums for discs of a vortex(bolts straight in), and if your putting in an ej20 turbo youll need the wrx hubs/brakes/wheels etc.
    GA23(never finished-now with cracked block ) JZX83 (Tyre eater) 3sgte AE86. by now i should know better.
