    Default Toyota External Ignitors

I have located a source for currently well priced remanufactured 4KC electronic distributors in the US, just awaiting definite confirmation it is an external ignitor dizzy and not a 4KE internal ignitor dizzy.

This is to convert a K motor from points to electronic ignition, nothing fancy,

With regard to external ignitors, are Toyota ignitors all essentially the same, with part number variations simply down to plug, wire length or mounting variation?

Could I for example use a 21R ignitor, or something similar with it. Searching around I am guessing the answer is yes, with some plug changes.

    Cheers

There are plenty of alternative igniters around... no need to get another Toyota unit.

I used a nice bosch unit that can be bought from SuperCheap a few years back with my 21RC....

Very simple, compact, worked perfectly with the 21RC reluctor dizzy.
Coil was off a Tercel, also found on a few other Toyotas.

use the 1227808 camira (bosch) ignitor - they are readily available and a good unit and looks similar to MWPs above..

I already have a couple of 21R Toyota ignitors picked up at the wreckers in order to do GA61XX's T distributor conversion, so don't need to buy them or anything.

Was planning to use the coil with ignitor from one of those.

Going by what you have both said, I gather it should work perfectly.

only thing you need to keep in mind is to whether the ignitor is 'smart' or 'dumb' IIRC dumb don't control dwell (ECU based) whereas 'smart' to control dwell...

I saw in a thread that Witzl noted that most Toyota ignitors were "smart". But I guess he is talking of more modern models.

The 21R ignitors I have came off carbied engines, and the 4KC donor dizzy looks to be carbed too going by toyodiy.com.

So I imagine they would all only require dumb ignitors, and any ignitor from the pre EFI days should be satisfactory.

The dizzy is a good deal so I might give it a go.

On a non-EFI engine, a reluctor triggered ignitor is a smart ignitor.
They monitor coil charge voltage/current and adjust dwell for the next firing.
