Decide first your horsepower goal, then decide which box you need, then work out how to fit it.

The W58 is a fantastic box and will be a much easier fit, but will become debatably unreliable once you get up around 280-300rwhp. PLenty of people have used them with far, far more than that but personally I've changed more than a couple myself that have died at those power figures. Vehicle weight, torque output and driving style will also have an impact but anything up around 300rwhp is a nice rule of thumb for the need to consider other options.

Unless I'm a monkey, I too find the search on this site to be fairly crap.

If you have trouble with the search function, try searching the Toymods site through Google. Also the similar threads section at the bottom of the posts can often have good relevant threads in it. For example, below is a thread on W58 into TA22 which will probably be of some help regarding fitment.

you should be able to find a w series box that fits fairly easily but you will also need bell housing to suit the engine

There is also no 'off the shelf' way to bolt an R154 to a 3S (unless the 3S rwd auto uses an A340E), so that kinda makes the choice a bit simpler.
