I don't know why you wouldn't be able to have a speedo or rev counter... I've used a 1UZ in a 280zx and have a speedo and tacho working fine.

There is even a tach signal that you can get from the computer to drive a tacho. Depending on what tacho it is sometime you may need a 'booster' circuit to get a correct reading, but if you had a 4 cylinder before the 1UZ should even have the correct number of pulses due to the ignition kinda running like two 4 cylinders.

For the speedo, does it have a cable drive in the gearbox or an electronic one?

I know there have been quite a few 1UZ's into hilux's so I'm pretty sure with a little searching you should be able to find the answers.

U will have a tacho or rev counter as u call it
But u might not have a speedo
But there is other ways around that

First check your transmission for one or two speed sensors on extension housing

If the sender on your box is mechanical you can also get a device to convert the signal to suit your electronic speedo or if you need a mechanical fit to your speedo you can get a pass through device that allows the cable signal to go from box to speedo + generate a signal for your ecu.

Talk to the guys at CAE performance and tell them what you are trying to achieve.

I recon being vvti there might be only one speed sensor
And that's for the ecu to control the auto
I've done late model 2j vvti stuff and they don't have speed sensor for dash
U should have a two wire sensor for ecu
And if there is a three wire sensor that for the dash

    nope
near hole where the tailshaft slides in should be 1 or 2 sensors

OK lets clear a few things up.. firstly are you using the auto that comes with the UZ or going manual? If manual you won't have too much of a problem but auto then a big tin of worms is opened. Now if auto firstly you need to find out if you have a 4 or 5 speed auto. If a 4 speed then there is good news but I'll cover that after you confirm what you have. Here is why and as an example I use a UCF21 Celsior as the donor car. On these later ones that do not have the "Speedo sender" in the extension housing of the gearbox they use the left front wheel ABS sensor for the signal for not only speedo but also the Vehicle Speed Sensor for the ECU. Now I think that this signal goes to the ABS module which in turn converts the signal for both speedo and VSS so you need to find out what "pulse" this is. Being Toyota I'm pretty sure that it's 4 pulses per revolution. So in reality the speedo isn't your only problem. First thing to do here as I've said is to post up which transmission you are running and we'll go from there.

Tacho.. being "Coil on plug ignition" there should be an output from the ECU to drive the tacho. Again not knowing what the pulse is on these engines (they aint come to WA in great numbers yet but the earlier engines triggered the tacho from a 4 cyl pulse) what you need to do is this.. Wire the tacho as normal and remove the front of the instrument cluster. on the "Guts" of the tacho you should see a "Trim pot". Now you will need a "Master Tacho" or be able to plug the engine into a scanner and use the "live Data Function", however in this instance a photo electric tacho may be the go. Run the engine at say 3000rpm and ajust the trim pot until the dash tacho reads what the master says. Job done and end of problem.

Now while I think that I'm correct here I'm pretty sure that another learned member here will either agree or correct me if I'm wrong

Post up a clearer pic of the tail housing of the auto and also the part number from the ECU (89661-*****) and I'll be able to identify what you have and advise you from there

That still does not solve the Vehicle speed sensor problem
