get a gen3 3S-GTE conversion
Hey Guys,
I got a 96' Model MR2 non-turbo eddition and after completing the outside of the car im looking to bump up the power now. Im not particularly mechanically minded so I was wondering if any of you could give me some help and tips of what I can do for what I want.
I was wondering what I could do to max out the accelleration of the car (ie just making it go from 0-100 as quick as possible).
Your posts and help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much!
Cheers![]()

Isnt there anything else i may be able to do other than just putting a turbo in it? And thanks both for your posts.
Plus i have two seperate boot lids... one with the wing and one plain... so i got that covered already! lol
good free flowing exhaust
new intake system
supercharger = no lag
You can throw a bunch of money at bolt ons for the stock motor for very little benefit or swap in something that has the performance you want. If you want to stay NA a Beams 3S would be a decent improvement or a 2GR-FE would be really nice. If you are happy to go forced induction then just buy a Gen3 turbo half cut and swap it all over.
That's a tidy looking SW20 mate! I wouldn't mess around with the standard motor, it'll cost you a fortune for what are really fairly small upgrades:
Exhaust+extractors with cat: $1200
Cams+ cam gears: $1000+
Intake: $300
Aftermarket ECU: $2000-4000
Rebuild motor, port/polish heads, high comp pistons: $5000
And after all that you'd probably only be making an extra 20-30% over stock, and the motor would be less "driveable' at low RPM. I'd either go for a turbo motor conversion, or a V6 conversion. The V6 is my personal favourite, they sound incredible, are great on fuel, and as reliable as a camry...

V6 convert for the win, it's what I will be doing once I have time+money+space.
In the meantime the cheapest way is to drop some items out of it. Take out the spare wheel, the subs, the amps, carpet, linings, electric window motors, anything else that adds weight (like that wing ! ).
It will go back to comfort vs performance.
Ok so it looks like the V6 seems to be a pretty popular option, im just looking over some of the other posts about it and just trying to figure out what parts and things i may need.
Does anyone have like a list for what i need to get or anything?
Cheers!
for V6 conversions, you might want to check out www.twobrutal.co.uk for ideas and hints.
Also check out Gouky's and Jameus's build threads here for a couple different V6 options and what's required.
Just checking out Gouky's thread now... pretty heavy stuff! Lol!
Thanks all for your help, if you have any other ideas or anything, please let me know! I can probably use all the help i can get!
Cheers,
You can get the mounts from the UK, the rest you'll need is a
complete engine, with loom, ECU, etc,
manual flywheel
good clutch
New exhaust and intake fabricated
That's about all I can think of for the minute, Jameus has plenty of really good info about this conversion.

You can get some decent power out of the 3S-GE in N/A form, but if you can get the car Engineered (correctly, not using some dodgy/questionable Engineer) for the V6 Engine, such that Insurance has you covered in case of an accident, then don't hold back and go the V6 conversion.
A rebuild (with high comp pistons), cams and FC wouldn't go beyond $3k if you did most of the labour yourself on the 3S-GE but I wouldn't expect 0-100 times to drop under 6 sec.
