4A's are a cheap motor, and 2k for one that doesn't run properly and is dismantled is rediculous. I think the average price is probably around $1200 for a complete fwd 4a with ECU loom and gearbox.
The block's are cast iron, and the heads are alloy. Generally when you overheat them it's the heads that warp. This in turn leads to the head gasket losing tension and creating a weak spot and then pop. This is more likely to happen around the outside of the motor, not between pistons. Between pistons a HG failure is probably more likely a result of detonation.
