    Default 4AGE Blown Head Gasket

    Just a question.
Im looking at a AW11 with a blown HG 2 and 3 are connected..
Is this a common thing in a older 4age..
Or would the motor had ahve to have orver heated for it to pop...
If it did does the block warp or just the head..
The motor was running but very rough. he has half dissmantled it and is selling for 2k...
Any advice as i know nothing about these motors..
What is the block made out off alloy or cast iron??

4A's are a cheap motor, and 2k for one that doesn't run properly and is dismantled is rediculous. I think the average price is probably around $1200 for a complete fwd 4a with ECU loom and gearbox.

The block's are cast iron, and the heads are alloy. Generally when you overheat them it's the heads that warp. This in turn leads to the head gasket losing tension and creating a weak spot and then pop. This is more likely to happen around the outside of the motor, not between pistons. Between pistons a HG failure is probably more likely a result of detonation.

Ridiculos as in a complete bargain??
The body is average but the interior is mint...
So it detonated,,, so maybe poor fuel was used or the fuel pump is on its way out, fuel filter is bocked...
Hope there wouldnt be any cylinder or piston damage...
I might buy it put a new gasket in and take my time looking for a ze...
I was thinking a 20v silver top but thats 5k installed i think a ze might be a bit less..

leeRoy - He's looking at a whole car, not just a motor.

Locote - It sounds to me like you would be paying people to do a GZE/20v conversion for you, if thats the case, then I would just look aroung for a factory supercharged AW11. It will work out cheaper in the end

Same guy has a GZE for $7000 aswell...
Just i need a car asap as i wanna part out my B18c EG to get the most $$ out of it...
If i get this 2k AW11 i could replace the gasket my self for Toyota parts price, and have it running and once i sell my honda stuff buy a ZE.....

Yeah got quoted 5k for a 20v silver installed
2.5k for a stock motor, 3.8k for a 100kw, but i didnt ask bout ZE would it cost more than the 20v??

What motor would be more fun in a AW11??

Another crazy idea i though was to stick the B18c in the mr2, but hondas rotate the oposite way so there would be a lot of work to be dun, and at the end a ze would yield better results..

    welcome to the forums,
i don't want to question your ability too much, cos i don't know you
but the 4age head removal and refit is not that easy for a novice
do you have any experience with automotive repair?
do you have the required tools needed for this job?
do you have an 4age engine workshop manual?

theres things like cam timing that has to be spot on or it will not run
and the head bolts can't be reused

it's not just a simple case of replacing a gasket
    theres alot more involved

sorry if i sound negetive, but its better if your well informed
cos this bhg job could cost more that what your paying for the whole car
especially if you get professional assistance.
repco wanted $400 for the gasket kit alone
    cheers............

    ooh...
    I have the manual...
I have experience with auto repair...(i do most of the work on my civic)
I have replaced a cyl head gasket on a E15et nissan motor before and it ran just fine...
But yeah maybe it might be too much of a job been a DOHC motor...

cool then, it sounds like your experienced enough

get a quote on the gaskets, stretch bolts, head machining, new valve guides, valve refacing and labour , new timing belt, new drive belts, new spark plugs, fuel and air filters, engine oil, coolant, new thermostat and any cooling hoses that are suspect.

only then you can weigh up the costs verses buying a mr2 thats in good condition.

hope this info helps on your decision......good luck

yer- you can still pach it up, but you'll still have to cough up $1000 at least for the minimum, and thats if you do the work yourself. old worn guides and old timing belt and no valve refacing, old plugs. no new injector seals, no injector cleaning.

it'll idle high after and blow smoke and lack power, pretty dissapointing after spending 1k
thats what i went through myself....
oh yer- mine was blown between 2 and 3 because i had an exhaust manifold gasket failure and was too slack to fix it, then one day it started running with no power and sounded like a lawn mower, that'l learn me
