Default Gearbox/clutch noise when clutch released

Hi all, I think I know what is going on here but wanted to confirm it with ya as would really liked to be proved wrong..

In the 80 series, there is a gearbox or clutch bearing noise that has been getting worse recently.
The noise goes away if you depress the clutch..
See I was hoping it was the clutch bearing or spigot..
But I figure if it goes away when the clutch is depressed this more indicates the gearbox?

When driving I can hear a bit of a noise/whine from the gearbox but its hard to pinpoint this bearing noise unless when you are stationery.

    Thanks

If the noise is there when it is in neutral with the engine running but then goes away when the clutch is pressed I'd put money on the thrust bearing. If the bearing is loosly dragging on the pressure plate fins with the clutch released and is full of clutch dust it will sound pretty average. Try to confirm by loosening off the clutch fork to pull the bearing away from the pressure plate. The bearing should stop moving and go quiet.

Hey Glen, my understanding of this must be wrong.. I thought the thrust bearing was pretty much doing nothing when the clutch is released, and under load when the clutch is depressed..
So I would have guessed i'd hear more noise when the clutch is depressed?

Right, so if there isn't any change between spinning with no load and spinning under a load when the pedal is half way to disengaging the clutch, and absolutely no change when the clutch fork is moved a few mm towards the slave, then it is a trans. bearing noise & not a release/throwout bearing noise. The pilot/spigot only turns & can only make noise when the clutch is completely disengaged, pedal on the floor.

It's the bearing for the input/first motion shaft and/or cluster gear/counter/lay shaft or a slight possibility of the needle bearings between the input and main shaft.

I'll have a play with the fork tonight and see if pulling it towards the slave makes any difference to the noise.

Hey does anyone know if the input shaft bearing can be changed without stripping the box apart? I am thinking of pulling the box out and changing the spigot, thrust and hopefully input shaft bearing.
Prefer not to strip the box down unless I really have to.
    Thanks

the noise would more than definately be thrust bearing... i used to get it alot in the Celica cause i had the bearing really close to the pressure plate as i like my clutch really high.

this caused the bearing the just touch the pressure palte and cause the noise...

    cheers
