what sort of wierd noise? is it constant, or does it vary with revs, describe it.
it could be the power steering belt but i personally have never seen em over tensioned enough to do damage
Hi all
Did 100,000 service on my gz20 over the weekend, including water pump, thermostat, timing belt, idler pulleys and belts. Now i have a problem though. There is a strange noise coming from the front of the motor, its sounds like the timing belt but the power steering is now also making noises and not smooth when you turn the wheel.
would too much tension on the PS belt cause this?
The car runs fine so why would the timing belt be making noises?
any ideas.

its like a whining noise that varys with revs, its strange ill have to try and post it on youtube. Im just worried ill have to take it all apart to fix it.

I experienced the same thing. If its making a whining sound especially at idle you have too much tension on the timing belt. Back off the tensioner and allow the spring to put all the tension, dont add anymore yourself. Do it every 10k .Dont worrie, she wont jump off!

hmm thought that might be the case, only did the bolt up to the spec in the manual, can you get to that without taking everything off?

you can access the tensioner from a small removable cap on the front of the timing cover

took the top timing cover off and the belt is loose, its rubbing on the cover between the tensioner and the left cam. I re tensioned but as soon as i replace the cover it happens again.
Is there any harm in tightening the tensioner bolt beyond the 22Nm it says in the manual?

ive tried everything, the only thing i can think of is that the belt is wrong, i know i ordered the correct one but not sure on the one they supplied, the numbers dont add up with the old one.
old belt-13568-88300 (not a toyota belt by the looks of it though strangely has 'powergrip' written on it but not 'gates' that i can see)
new belt-13568-88340

well, i presume the 135 part of the number = the number of teeth which is right, and the width looks ok, so maybe your tension spring is perished and isnt pulling the belt hard enough?

my 7M did a similar thing, the two cam sprockets came loose and the belt wandered to the back of the sprockets and rubbed away at the front of the motor.
Why dont u leave the cover off and run it? may be able to see whats going on.
when i adjusted it for the second time i saw that the belt was flapping becuase it was loose, so i tightened it and it didnt make a difference, so the third time i didnt worry about tension i just made the belt as tight as i could and it still rubbed.
Ya cant leave the cover off permanently either cause it is a support for a bunch of wires that pass so close to the timing belt and accesories belts its not funny.
I just dont get it.
