i know they use the motor bike engines in many cars they werent originally designed for. however i'm not interested in goin down that route.

yeh dont know my porsches just goin of memory, pretty close just one wrong number, the point i was trying to make is that i dont think the rear transaxles have an inherent weakness that i should be worrying about in my relativly low hp build.

PLONKA thanks for the helpful info, there's an alfa specialist im gonna see tommorrow and he should be able to help source /advise.

i will only go this way if i can get it registered and make it a car that is goining to be friendly to drive every other day. i dont want some power plant that has to have the nuts revved of it to make it go,

also the main reason i'm thinking of using the rear mounted gearbox was to hopefully allow enough room in the front for a NS eng setup without having to cut a massive tranny tunnel or stupid nose extensions, thus leaving the car look like it should from the outside and as much as possible in the inside.

The V8 Mini that was built local to me was standard bodied with only the longer clubman front. Your other issue is going to be width. To keep it narrow enough will require lots of custom work on suspension arms and axles.

i think your major issue with a 9XX series porsche rear end is gonna be the size, especially the width-most porsches run tyres wider than the mini !
Also you would need a larger than normal tunnel down the chassis to fit the torque tube around the tailshaft, plus porsche bits cost so bloody much. At least youd have no dramas with strength though.
p.s Do you definatly want a manual? You should be able to get a 924 3 speed auto for reasonable money which would simplify matters a bit
    GA23(never finished-now with cracked block ) JZX83 (Tyre eater) 3sgte AE86. by now i should know better.

yeh.....was not really considering the porshe box. they'd be hard to find and expensive.

went and looked at some rotor's and boxer eng's. think the wrx eng would be ideal, possibly even an NA 2L. very short in length, found i could get an alfa transaxle from the V6 model for about 1k from a wrecker. dependant on how big clutch housing is i may just put a small buldge in the back for it.

other thoughts would be a transverse V-twin eng or one of the 1100cc BMW boxer bike eng's. think they're shaft driven. my friends got one i'll have to go and have a more detailed look at it.

spoke to guy about making a single rotor, said he's done it before for an airplane but wouldnt recommen it for the cost. would be real small, but the crank poition in them would mean that eng would sit real low, so prob nt goin rotor route.

also due to the rotor capacity classification issue it prob wouldnt be an option anyway.
