    Default Ta22 rear end options

    Hey guys,

well the diff centre crapped out in my ta22 a couple of weekends ago, and its stuffed

got a 2nd hand center piece in, whining away while i work out what angle i am going to take on the situation

working with a local guy who has been really helpful, chasing around dollars and cents of upgrading to a hilux diff, with ma70 rear rotors and calipers, with all modifications (tabs from the t series for mounting, shortening axles, re-drilling back to 4x114.3 etc)

then getting the lsd when i do the heart transplant a little down the track

now, we havent worked out the final figure, but i am guessing its going to hit the wallet

what do you guys think? am i wasting my time or is there a better/cheaper option

i have been recomended a commodore/falcon rear end, but no thanks, and i was told not to bother with the volvo diff too

    cheers

torago, early corona or hilux depending on your power output.

    obviously the lighter the better.

the ovlov diff works but they are a pain in the arse to change centres in and the diff needs to be jigged differently to a banjo style.

BW's suck but atleast parts are available for them easy

    cheers

if going for an 'F' series form a corona or torago how much would need to be shortened from these diffs to suit a ta22? and what are the options? is there extra spline on the axles like some hilux's or will new splines need to be cut?

Are you running forced induction of some sort? If not i would suggest its not worth upgrading from a T series as you wont have enough torque to really trouble it. What sort of power are you making with your worked 2t?

Also what is your aim with this car? The more weight in the diff the slower it will be.

I am yet to get the 2t onto the dyno, but i am estimating roughly 70-80kw at the wheels, but i could be wrong,

running dual 40mm webbers, bigger cam, spanking new head, rebuilt bottom end, and extactors

i am going turbo in roughly 12 months, so i was just going to bite the bullet and upgrade the diff now, thinking 4agte or the 3sgte

    basically looking for 150-200kw

    Hi,

sounds like fun. I'm not sure what the ta22 gt's had in them but i know the ra2x gt's had an f series diff standard. I'd be guessing the ta22's did aswell.

If you're going for that sort of hp i'd be looking for a hilux diff.....

your talking about the ae86 series are you not?

i already have an ae86 diff installed in the ta22 for the rear disks, which work a treat

but forking out that much for an lsd for the t series would kinda be a waste, if the center doesnt break, then i would be forever chasing axles (just like the pics in turdinator's build log - link in his sig above)

This issues has been covered lots in the past. Do a bit of searching on this forum and it will answer all of your problems with an f series (and other diffs) into a ta22. As to width, it does depend on the donor vehicle and what you intend to do with front brakes in the future as that will also drives the type of wheels you intend to use. You may also have wheels that you intend to keep which will drive the width of the diff. Also if you are looking at the longer term you may also wish to move to 5 stud wheels that again open up lots of opportunities for different wheels and offsets.

I also suggest that you have a look at members/forum rides and have a look at what others have done with their vehicles. For example my TA23 works great, I has an f series (mx23), corona disks, hilux/pug front and some 15x7 wheels that fit perfectly in the guards (and 17x7 for the track). Others have similar solutions that suit their needs.
