From R154 to A340 opinions please, what mods?

Hey guys,

I have a JZX83 cressy

well after i sold my R154 setup Ive done a little research for my tow car/daily for the auto conversion and i have come up with this package

A340 auto conversion out of MX83 (swapped as part of manual sale)
1.5 MV auto style box mods incl manual shift $400 quoted from a place here in sydney (cheap or expensive?)
2800 stall converter from slingshot between $600 and $750
Trans cooler of some sort

Now the car also has a single turbo and injectors and the regular mods, ECU, FMIC, TBE, and is yet to be tuned but im guessing around 240RWKW with the auto. (daily tune)

and remember the car will be used mainly for daily driving around 100km a day give or take and a little towing. (very rarely tow but maybe a little more in the future pending the rolla gets fixed soon)

It cops a pretty hard time, drags, burnouts etc so are there things i need/should do before i put it all in?

there is obviously alot of info out there when i search this but its filtering it all out thats hard. Im after some people that own or build etc on these.

I would like to keep the shifting fairly smooth if possible and also some hints on what shifter to use would be helpful. Ratchet shifter for daily use worrys me a little but who knows might add to street cred

I think you will find that heat will be the biggest killer to any auto transmission. You want a large tranny cooler and maybe even another one with thermo fan on it if you like a good skid or two. Wouldnt be a bad idea if you get a trans temp guage just so you know when its time to back off or settle down.

I got quoted from MV $500 delivered for a 2800 series stallie, not bad i thought.

And a shift kit is a must for anything over 200kw aparantly, it will make the box last longer - i am on my third in 6 months!

Shift Kit = valve body upgrade (vince can do it)

2800 stall from MV was around 500 (maybe less but i cant remember as we went even bigger again)

Shifter, id run a stocker until it shits you (if it shits you) and then upgrade later to save on initial coin spendage.

the biggest trans cooler you can find, (MSCN shopping time)

the only thing you left off the list is getting someone to wire it in, IE a shift box for soleniod control (can get from jimmy cheap) and wire up inhibitor switch (you don't want it running away on you.

I was waiting for that! But i cant stand towing with a manual and my "fun" car is manual and im old now so auto it is!

Vince wanted $400 to do valve body.... I though it was a bit rich

Ok rang MV and was qouted as follows:

2800 stall (my converter modded) $460
Shift kit. $350
Manual shift box $260
Shifter brackets for ratchet shifter $45
B&M pro ratchet shifter approx. $350
PWR trans cooler kit. $165
Freight to and from approx $100

All seems pretty good to me. I will have a look around for a few quotes but sounds pretty good value for money IMO as I'm sure some are up there and some are cheaper so it all evens out I guess.

Is the MX83 box stronger enough to handle the power?
Or does all the weak stuff get swapped out when you put a shift kit in ?

apparently so yes it is, like you said the weak parts are replaced in the shift kit/ manual shift process as I understand it. I did mention to MV that I will be towing/skids/drags/daily but I guess only time will tell.

1JZ.747 ran an A340 modified by MV for quite a while and we all know that the results of that car speak for themselves.

From what i can find in his thread/website, i believe he ran 1.500 60', 6.3 1/8th mile, 9.801 et at 144.5 mph and know at least a 10.45 @ 134mph on the A340. Power was around the 750rwhp mark (for the 9sec run). The Power Glide went in about page 24 of his ride thread.

But the 7MGE, 7MGTE and 1JZGTE (probably the 1GGE/GTE and others as well) all run A340E's, however they can differ internally.

Cheers, i am not sure on the exact differences apart from the obvious (bellhousing to suit engine). Though, with the amount he is suggesting to change, does it really matter?

I was more suggesting Shane as a point of contact with a lot of experience on the matter, as too Mike from MV.

Thats something you'd definitely want to clarify with the builder.
