Default RA28 internal tank surge tank ideas

Hi all, after the classic celica cruise to wisemans ferry and having my eyes burning the whole way from fuel fumes i've decided the in-cabin surge tank has to go.

I'd really like to simplify the setup by having a surge tank inside the original fuel tank. Doing away with lift pump also.

I was thinking of cutting a hole in the bottom of the tank, sliding a round bit of pipe, 3 - 4" maybe up into the tank. The hi flow pump would feed from the bottom of this pipe that would extend down under the tank 10cm or so maybe.

Some holes or trap doors in the sides of the pipe to allow fuel in and out.. This is where i'm a bit stuck and would like some advise if it'd work or not.. I thought I could even do a trap door system like used in some race sumps.. Or just simple holes.

It needs to support a lot of track time/corning etc.. So hoping I can find a solution that will meet the requirements and not surge on cornering.

    Here is a pic..

    Thanks
    Joel

Any reason not to mount the tank+pumps under the car like rod has done?

a properly built surgetank would probly suit you alot better, especially for track usage.

what happens if you have an off track experience with something hanging below the tank? chances are it could be torn off.

i do a surge tank for 28's that holds 1.5L of fuel and fits neatly into the rear of the car. there is 1 line thats in the car but its hardline with no rubber joins therefore no smell.
its completely covered by the original tin work also.

ask Stidnam what he thinks of his.

    Cheers

I suggest looking at bigmats build thread. In his last few posts show what he has done. I like the idea, providing there is some baffling within the tank..

Ill be designing an intank setup for my ra28 shortly

P.S. sorry to dob you in mat.

Linden, yeah thats my only other solution to use something like you've explained or like MWP did and actually weld a box around that area so it's completely sealed from the cabin and have the surge tank hanging out of that area.

It doesn't need to be sealed/ boxed as there are no fumes to worry about.

    D/S rear

Bigmat is selling the one i sold him ages ago, not sure why he changed his mind.

my system and lindens work just aswell as each other. i chose to go a different route because my tank was off my car and it needed some attention anyway. the 044 is noisy and i didnt want a freaking headache when im cruising.

the celica tanks do have some baffling in them so extra might help but i dont know.

lindens works and works well and is alot cheaper and affordable than mine

mine will set you back close to $1000 all setup

    hope this helps

    cheers mat

Except dont weld in the actual surge tank like i did.
Its not leaky, but still quite a bad idea in hindsight

Mark so you'd put some form of bolt / bracket to hold it in?

    Yeah, for sure.
Being able to remove the tank for cleaning, modification, etc would be handy.
It wouldnt end up being as compact as my setup though.
