Default 3T-GTE idle sound and throttle response

    Hi Everyone,

I have a TA22 with a 3T-GTE in it currently running 192.8 rwkws. Ive spent quite a few $$$ on the dyno, and the car is driving really good but it could idle better and have a little better response from idle.

I want to know if slight roughness and a slight delay in throttle response is a characteristic of these old 80's engines?

The motor had a complete rebuild of the bottom end, and recondition of the head. It has been balanced from Balancer to clutch and had quite a bit of tuning so my thoughts are that this relates to the design of the motor or possibly intake setup?

Should these Motors idle as smooth as a brand new car if it's had all this work to it, or am I pushing my luck?

I would love yo hear from other 3T-GTE owners!!!

You can find more information about by checking out my post...

Hi, don't know how much help I will be, but, my 3TGTE is stock rebuilt, everything stock except the Haltech E6A, and Haltech sensors. Very minimal tuning, but starts first go every go, idles perfectly smooth, and seems to have good response from idle(no hesitation etc). rev's cleanly with no missing or cutting out. I don't drive it though and will have it tuned properly before I do, I just start it every now and then to keep everything circulating and have only driven it around the block a handful of times.

looking at your spec's I see you are running the RX7 injectors, I have heard that these are not great at idle, but work well at open throttle etc??? This is just what I have come across from searching the forum, might pay to look into this a bit, maybe a problem???

I had a look at your members thread, and reckon you need more photos of car and engine bay .

    Cheers Brendan

    Najje,

What is your pulse width at idle and map pressure at idle? and do you have any idle control ?

Mine idles smooth, I have no idle control so cold thorttle response is not great (not a factor for me as it is a track car). I use 440cc injectors.

Your injectors may be playing a role, however there are things you may be able to do about it.

you shouldnt have any problems with the haltech.
get the stepper motor idle control and will idle perfect with every cold start..........(that also depends on the tuner if the are any good)

i run an E8 in mine with all the haltech gear and it is perfect.

This might be as useful as suggesting the water was a bit high once you've been washed off the side of the bridge... but...

This is an old school trick which usually helps out grumpy big cammed motors or low compression turbo motors with both idle and low rpm throttle response - feed it heaps of intial timing. For grumpy old school V8' s with big cams etc we would either lock the dizzy completely with total desired timing or give it a greatly reduced advance curve starting at say 25 degrees initial. For our low comp turbo motor we have a locked dizzy starting at 40 degrees initial timing with motec pulling it out under boost. This really smooths out the idle and gives good throttle response to what is otherwise a pig of an engine!

    Cheers,
    Jason
