Default How to put in a headunit without destroying my ta22 dash HELP!

I just recieved my Kenwood headunit today and first thing i done was to find out if it would fit between the air vent and the steering column, and it does! heres a pic:

I couldnt keep it level whilst taking the pic, but it does line up with the dash.
Now I think these screw holes were for the dealer optioned cassete player so mount onto

Is there anyway i can mount the unit using these holes.

Also i havn't yet bought speakers, I want to take out the parcel shelf and make a new one that can house to 2 decent speakers, im not sure one what size yet, now I do need speakers up the front, but ive seen to many 1st gen doors ruined with ugly speakers, is there anyway i can take out the one in the middle/front of the dash and replace it with a decent but same size one or do i have to take the whole dash apart to get to it. or is 1 up front and 2 back just not going to work

    Any help would be appreciated

    Hi Mate,

1st question: In the first photo, there is clearly a pic of an old cassette deck... why not remove that and put the h/u there? Would look heaps better without that old deck there, and your passenger can still reach it to change cds while driving...

In regards to your front speakers, thats a hard one. 2 front speakers are always better than one... but could get tricky. Hopefully some one can help you that has done this before. Maybe check out the members ride area? May be a write up on some one that has done it before?

    Kind Regards,

    Ryan

INDEED BLASPHEMY!! That is the AM radio which still works perfectly, and wont be taken out. Also the h/u has am/fm radio, will i have to disconnect the am radio to get the h/u radio working?

Best bet is to mount it under the passenger seat or in the glove box. Don't cut that dash!!

Righto then I will kindly fuck off

Just wanted to ask the question... cause there is SOOO000ooo much to listen to on the AM... sometimes I forget it exists untill I accidently hit the band button and hear that familar AM static...

P.S. This is easily mounted with some angle and flat bar...

    Good luck with that.

    Hi,

Mount it under the dash between the steering wheel column and the console. You have room to mount it as I did the same for the head unit in The 88, and her interior is the same as the TA22.

    Don't hack you dash.

Don't put the head unit in the glove box, because not only is it a prick to see/control from there, but why would you put holes in your glovebox? I know a lot of people do that, but I think it's a stupid idea, especially when you can mount it under the dash (which means it can be removed later on and there'll be no holes or other damage).

Of course, just to confound people, I have to opposite opinion to door speakers. I don't have any issue mounting speakers in the doors. Best case is you get nice sound. Worse case is you've "ruined" door panels. But considering a trimmer can totally remake door cards and trim them, you can always get it back to original. You may have a metal hole cut into your door skin to fit the speaker, but this is not an issue as it can be covered up with a new re-trimmed door panel.

Too many ppl get uppity over door speakers, yet have no problems hacking the rest of the car for different engines, gearboxes, diffs and suspension. The interior door skin is nothing. Just look at some nice installs and go from there.

Pitty I threw out my 2 TA22 door cards and speaker pods that I had. you could had have them for nothing, as I no longer need door cards.

here is the only pic I've got, from the sale thread 4 years ago.

If done well they can look and sound very good. Just don't hack the dash.
