    Default T-Series Alternator Upgrades

Is anyone aware of a good bolt in (or near bolt in) upgrade for a 2TG? By upgrade I mean in terms of amperage/charging capacity. Got 650w of lights on the front now and the stocker isn't happy, especially with wipers, fan, stereo etc...
Have done some searching but to no avail...

    Cheers guys!

Not sure what will work for you at low speeds. Why have 650W lights??
Change them to 100W (which is plenty) and your problem is solved.

Just go to the wreckers and grab one off a Falcoon or something, change the pully over and custom make a bracket! Easy.

Early Hilux or Hiace or something? an autoelec friend mentioned it the other day, dunno if they were bolt in though but he said they definitely had a higher output.

I live in the mountains and bright lights are grouse, that my justification anyway...
To clarify, they're "just" four 150w hi-beams, not 650w each.

Is the pully shaft a standardized size on alternators? if so changing pulleys would be sweet, but I dont really have the facilities to make a custom bracket.

Dont spose the T18 rolla would have had a higher output alternator?
Should check the Bosch catalogue hey.

oh yeah, the T18 wont have as high a spec as the 22RE as the T18 wasnt EFI.

EA Falcon - Some of them have 85Amp alternators, Bosch, internally regulated.

Some slight grinding of the alternator mount (take 5mm off the rear-pointing face) and a little squeezing, plus a new belt......

    All done.

P.S. I'll be posting a guide tonight of how i did this on my 18RG. AFAIK the 2TG has same mounting as 18RG (75mm foot spacing)

I believe that 22RE and 18RG have same foot spacing also, which would make the 22RE item bolt onto the 2TG. I think their good for 65 or 70 amps, which should be plenty for a carby engine even with big arse high beams.

Ripper. I'd be curious to know the RPM rating of the EA unit, seeing as my projected redline is nearly 4000rpm higher...
Witzl, how well did the belts line up on the 18RG?

    Cheers guys!

RPM rating of alts is typical for each design. the actual rpm is given in the Bosch Aus tech docs on their site.
the older style has lower total rpm, but begin charging at a lower rpm too.
the later compact design (without fan on front) have higher rpm rating, but are spun faster to compensate.
    ( i think they are about 14000 and 18000rpm?....)
i used sigma pulley to slow down a bosch alt for an early corolla. it can be donw, but you may lose charging at idle speeds.. all the time...

nup, i was wrong, foot spacing on the 22RE is opposite to the 18RG, and the brackets arent interchangeable... sorry.
