    Default 20v alternator problem

    Hi guys,

Just recently finished the 20v conversion in my AE95 and having some problems.

Not being very experienced with this sort of thing I had friends helping me and when it came time to grind the block the alternator was still connected to the motor and got covered in metal filings. I blew it out with the compressor as best I could.

The car is together and was running but I have no battery light on the dash. I'm pretty confident the wires were hooked up properly.

I took it for a test drive last night and got about 5 minutes down the road before the headlights and dash lights all went really dim and the car cut out and wouldn't start again.

Does this sound as if it is definately the alternator that's bunk?

Can I get a brand new one from Toyota for a S/T 20v from an AE101?

Can the current one be repaired? I have a workshop manual showing how to dissassemble it.

If not where could I get one new or second hand? Preferably in the next few days...

    Thanks.

you can get a new one from toyota for bout a 1000 bucks, but yes you can drop it off to your local auto lec to see if that can replace the bushes in it, but normally you can buy a aftermarket one to suit for round 300 dollars, i got a 120 amp alternator for my blacktop for $320 that was in townsville, so im guessing you could get one easier down there

but you can check the alternator is screwed by starting the car up and through a meter on the battery if it stays at 12 volts or the same as when the car was off your alternator is gone. Also double check the wiring

check your wiring , make sure both the power wires -ie- bat sence and ign are connected as well as the light wire or it won't work.
If thats not up your alley, take the alt to and auto elec shop and ask them to run it on their test bench, will only take 2 mins and you will know if its rooted or not.
    cheers

Failing that I'll pull it off and get it tested Monday.

Fixed and back on the road

Was some wires to the alternator that weren't wired up properly. Also got the reverse lights working and thermos switching off with the keys (still come on and stay on with ignition though).

No biggies at least I'm moving again, will sort the thermos out when I get 20v and AE95 workshop manuals and do the aircon wiring.

just go and buy a digital temp sensor i picked one up on the weekend basically you can program it to run all the thermo's on at what ever temp you wish from 0 up to 150 degrees. and they turn off when ignition or acc goes off depends on what you want them to run on

Good to see the Alt is sorted.
If i remember correctly, some of the corollas thermo fans keep running with ign on if
the thermo temp switch is unplugged, or maybe not wired, a type of fail safe ro it doesn't cook.
    cheers
