Default remove ae82 4age via top?

    Hey guys

Due to space constraints it will be easier for me to pull the engine out the top. I'm planning to:

Pull loom through firewall <---- where is the ECU? Kick panel or centre console?
Disconnect earths <---where are these on an AE82?
    Disconnect fuel lines
    Remove bonnet
    Remove radiator & hoses
Remove aircon (mine has no gas anyway)
Disonnect shifter linkage(s) <----- I'm a RWD man, is this just a matter of undoing some bolts or something?
Disconnect CVs <----- how do I do this? I did it once ten years ago
    Crack engine mount bolts
Take up tension with engine crane
Undo all engine mounts & remove gearbox mount
    Jack up engine
    Drink piss

Any dramas here, and can anyone fill me in on FWD and AE82 specific stuff

Pull loom through firewall <----ECU is located behind the centre console (behind your CD player)
Disconnect earths <---should be easily visible throughout the bay..
    Disconnect fuel lines

    ^^ added some things

no need to split the box to take it out of the bay, take it out of the top it is really easy!!!.. as you lift the engine and box out, when you get it even with the strut towers just put some weight on the gearbox end, to tilt the engine, and lift the engine and gearbox out like that.

i did a conversion in my ae82....was quite simple...

Cheers for that. Good to hear I don't have to split it - I had a look just after being told I'd have to split it and I was fairly convinced it would come out together with no worries at all.

are you taking the driveshaft out too
No idea. I just want to take the engine & box out, so whatever I have to do?

done this way too many times.

i usually start with radiator and thermo fans and thermostat housing. while the coolant is draining disconnect the heater hoses as well.

then the wiring loom, let it hang ten over the fender. dont forget the TVIS shit under the inlet manifold, and the alternator stuff while your there. the earths are at the back of the head above the alternator. its just a connector. the other earth is on the gearbox where the earth lead from the battery goes to.

disconnect fuel lines, clutch lines(i unbolt the slave cylinder with the complete line) acc. cable etc.

the drive shafts unbolt from the "half shafts" on the gearbox.when you lie under the car you will see what i mean. dont forget the speedo cable (unscrews from sensor) and shifter cables. the shifter cables have a "pin" that just pulls out with some pointy nose pliers. the cables are mounted to the gearbox with a bracket. you can either remove the bracket or remove the clips that hold the cables to the bracket.

remove the exhaust manifold and secondaries. dont snap the studs

remove the AC compressor for extra room (if it has gas in the system still you are required by LAW to get it professionally degassed) .

power steering pump can stay with motor. obviously disconnect the PS lines.

you can remove the crank pulley for extra room aswell. when your lifting out of the bay, twist the gearbox end toward the firewall and the t/belt end toward the rad support panel. be careful of the AC lines on the gearbox end. you sort of want the gearbox to hang a bit lower than the engine for clearance. with the engine mounts and cross member, i remove the cross member all together and let it all hang on the 2 chassis mounts. i do the cross member last with the crane hooked up ready to take the last 2 mounts off.

you dont have to pull the loom through the firewall if your just replacing your current engine. however if you are doing an engine conversion, the ECU plugs will come through the firewall grommet with a gentle nudge

im pretty sure thats about it.

Ok so I've pulled the battery, radiator & hoses, airbox, ECU & main loom, fuel line, a couple of vacuum thingamies, cracked all the engine mounts, clutch line, accelerator cable, disconnected the aircon & undone the extractors.

Can't get the speedo sender yet, I'll have another go tomorrow night as it's in a prick of a spot so I can't get much torque on it and it's TIGHT for a small bolt! Will need to drop the exhaust at the first flange/connector tomorrow. Driveshafts as well... I think that's prettymuch about it?
