Hi mate
I'm not sure why you would bother as the 21R is a bit of a poo motor.
I'm not a TA22 expert but there are probably better conversions that will be easier to do.
Can a 21R engine and gearbox from a 2000XT be fitted into a TA22. Is there any point in this conversion at all? Not wanting to speed but cruise.

Must.... avoid.... urge... to... upgrade... parts I haven't.... used.... yet.....
Thanks mate.
Hi,
i guess it could be done but pain in the butt at the same time. You need the w5x gearbox, custom xmember for both engine and gearbox, you would then need a mod plate for both. I'm pretty sure the 21r would be a bit heavier than the 2t so weight distribution will be out. More than likely a brake upgrade too, then modplate for that too. But as shifty said, 21r is a bit of poo. If you were going to go an r series go for the 18rg - common conversion but same required work as it's a 2 litre (same gearbox, same engine mounts etc) Easiest conversion is to put a 3t in - 1.8litre - fairly sure they just drop straight in. Or keep an eye out for 2tg, that will be the easiest for decent gains.
Only point i could see to putting a 21r in is they would have alot more torque - so if you were towing anything it would be good.

If you were going to all that trouble you would want to put in the 22R. It is a 2.4L and has some decent torque for what it is.

what, dont have any 4age ae82 corollas in ireland?
2TG, 3T, 3TG all viable choices bolts straight in take about three hours to change the 2TG or 3T in for someone handy with a spanner. 3TG is a turbo model so going to take more time. and more bits. 2TG is the twin cam version of your standard 2T and a nice little upgrade. runs the same G-box and won't bust your diff. . . well depends how you drive it. As road kill stated the 3T series is 1800cc, also uses the same G-box and brakes will be sufficient too. these are definately the and easiest and cheapest options. but if you want a nice cruiser go all out cut away your firewall and dump in a 1UZ in there custom up gearbox bell housing, engineer mounts and big F-off brakes and srtip the cabin back to a steering wheel and drivers seat. ha ha ha
The US had RA-21s, the TA-22 body shape with either the 18R or 21R engine.
The engines are longer and if you look at pictures in US Celica forums Toyota move the radiator forward and use a forward step in the top bolt on 'L' bracket between the lights.
And use different cross members for engine and gearbox but all mouting positions are there in the Aussie body.
I believe they have the same sized brakes as our TA-22s, if not then the next sized RA-23/28 ones. Others on here like River and the US forum members should be able to answer better.

better off with an 18rg or somthing of the sort, but is ya want to do a conversion make it worthwhile and do a 4agze/gte or somthing like that
a bloke down here in SA has a ke70 with a 22re in it and it goes pretty well... so if you were going to do an R series engine and not go 18rg (obvious choice) then that seemed to be pretty rocking.
I realise how crap the 2t is, i lived with one for over a year. sucked ass. a 2tg or 3t swap is much easier, that said i have no idea how common or uncommon those engines are in ireland so if you want some more poke maybe you will have to do something strange (21r) or maybe have an engine shipped in?
ta22 Green with cream vinyl roof, 2t/3t hybrid with a few go fast bits on + 5 speed.
Where will I get a good 3T engine from? Which donor car would be best?
they came in other celica's or not sure if ireland got the t18 but they were in those i think. Also there are some corrolla's which got them possibly.
