Are you going manual or auto.?
The ECU only uses the speed sensor for selecting the gear in the auto box. It wont stop it from revving if there is no speed sensor.
Oterwise you wouldn't be able to rev a 7M while sitting still in neutral.
After much umming and ahhing, I have decided to go ahead with the 7M-GE into 1st gen 4Runner conversion! Yay
Much research on these and other forums has lead me to a point where I believe I am capable of wiring up the 7m except for the SPEED SENSOR input in the ECU..
From what I have read it seems to be quite needed as far as the ECU is concerned. Being unable to rev as a consequence..
Being the old dinosaur it is, the old 3Y really has no need for one of these sensors and here lies my predicament!
I read recently that someone's mechanical driven speedo has a way of sending an electric pulse signal which they used as the signal to the ECU's speed sensor input..
Has anyone successfully overcome this problem?
Thanks in advance Modders![]()

Will be using the ECU from an auto but will be mating the motor with the manual box in the car..

Very few people hook up the speed wire during a conversion.
The ecu will throw a code when you get to about 100kph (code 42) if you don't hook it up.
I'm also not entirely sure how much of a part the speed input plays on idle control (ie, when you are slowing down for traffic lights).
I wouldn't be surprised if the 4Runner had the wire, as the 87-88 4Runners had the 4Y-E which would require the wire (I think so).
You may just need to extend it.
