Shame about the firewall hackage, but it looks like it will be a great package.
nowhere near complete, and not 100% toyota, but still interesting
but i thought i'd post up a project that i've kinda inherited to finish from my brother in law... originally a tricked up 2.0L pinto (see escort with NOS from user 'mattysshop' on youtube)
2zz-ge from celica (don't know if it was before the valve revision or not!?)
silver top 20V 4AGE quads throttle bodies
custom manifold
custom mounts (obviously)
custom extractors (4-1 with merge collector)
custom bellhousing (don't ask me why, but he insists on using the 4spd esky box (not standard ratios))
sheetmetal louvered lower sump/modified pickup
stainless cooling system piping to ally radiator (was there from the pinto)
new flywheel
full geniune gasket kit
to do:-
balance tube/idle speed controller of sorts (need to look into this a bit more)
adaptronic
fit efi pump (has 5/16's lines to and from the engine bay already and upright side escort tank, no surge tank required)
spin some trumpets for the quads
figure out how were doing the wiring, and what plugs to use as we only have the engine and 99% of the sensors..
+ more (custom clutch, strip down, reassemble long motor with new seals/gaskets etc etc etc)
about 2 years ago was when these pics were taken the car has been sitting locked in the shed till now.. so i will be doing a fair bit of work on this over the coming weeks.. sending out the extractors for ceramic coating tomorrow lol it's a start ok!!
feedback welcome

Strange things are afoot at the circle K
yeh, i know about the firewall... most of this weekend we will finish prepping and re-spray the whole engine bay.. wanted to mount it low/back as far as possible..
and yes i know abouut the ratio's.. thats the only reason why i bit my tounge.. even if it is only 4 coggs!!
Gold.
Ive often thought a 2zz into an ra28 or similary old school car would be nuts.
the engines themselves dont change between series 1 and series 2 celica engines,
only ecu changes and the fact series 2 has drive by wire, which doesnt matter in this case as you have quads.
You sure the quads will flow enough? 2zz's require a lot of airflow.
What ecu you going with?
Ill be following this with much interest, good work.
About time this one got going again
haha thanks Jason....
yeh tell me about it.. my bro in law works up at dysart.. gave me a call yesterday and started going through a list of to-do's...
cuts - i've been basing alot of figures on B18c/K20A honda engines.. (based kinda on the similar lift/duration/compression/power delivery etc etc) alot of those guys like GSXR quads.. which are actually a fly sh!t smaller than these.. they seem to run those GSXR quads fine for up to 240hp NA in some of the B18c's..
these also being a tapered TB might help a little in the bottom end.. but at the end of the day he really wants to put a blower on it.. in which case would revert back to a single TB of sorts..
when we bought the engine it didn't come with the factory manifold.. and i had a spare set of quads..
and i thought they revised the valves in the series 2/sportivo rolla versions of the 2ZZ, different materials or somthing? it's been a while since i've read up on them..
talked alot with Ant K, he seems pretty confident that an Adaptronic can run the show..
ohh and a quick pic of the bellhousing.. it wasn't finished in this pic.. but you get the idea..
I'd rather have 4 good gears than 5 rubbish ones...Originally Posted by mattysshop

yeh, AFAIK it's one of the closer ratio boxes... god knows how many different variants of the Type E 4spd left ford.... so were just hoping that it does fall off lift too much between 1st and 2nd.. but it's been off the rd that long and the 2L that was in it turned to 8k with the webbers and gas.. but he can't remember what rpm it was doing after the change..
were toying with the idea of lowering the lift kickin a little bit anyway.. seems a little painfull waiting for 6k to be on the dial before the fun starts.. maybe to 5.5k? not much.. but it's a little! beauty of aftermarket ecu.
if it's too far out of whack.. can always order a set of rocket box gears or some really close ones from quife... *read $$$$$*
2ZZGEs stayed cable-throttle, at least in Aus Sportivos. It was only the 1ZZFE which went to drive-by-wire at the update (and subsequently lost 7kw)Originally Posted by Cuts
Isn't the important thing with 2ZZGEs whether or not the lift bolts and oil-pumps were upgraded? I seem to remember early examples having trouble with both, something the Sportivos never suffered from as they always had the later engines (once again my knowledge is mostly of the Corolla 2ZZs not the Celica ones)
AE102 - Charlene the Old Faithful, Reborn
JZZ30 - Lexi the Spacecruiser, 1JZGTE>>3SGE. 200rwkw, hunting Skylines and n00bs in SS Commodores
ST162 - Charlie the non-ghey Celica, 3SGE>>4AGE. GOOOOOOOONE
AE82 - Rosie the Bitsa from Hell, 70.8kw atw. Has been converted into garage space and money at last
KE55 - Billie the Beast, sadly missed
Its the series 2 celicas thats have drive by wire like i said in my post before, havnt hreared about the oil pump issue. One thing that is/was a problem was celica and sportivo drivers when going from 5th to 4th miss and get 2nd, and the over reving ruins the engine....but thats driver fault.
Yeah the lift bolts need replacing in the earlier engines. They are all of a couple of bux from mr t and take stuff all time to replace (as long as yours are just worn and not broken). If they are broken be prepared for some with a drill, then an easy out.
5500 is a bit low imo.
we played around with it a while ago in my mates zzt231 and a pfc, we found 5800 is a good switch over point.
don't foget though, this will have full aftermarket ecu, quad throttles, custom tuned length extractors with a 18deg tapered merge collector.. so wheather or not this will help with the high cam profile at lower RPM we will just have to find out when tuning it..
the extractors arn't just banged together to get it to fit in the hole... there based on the same formulae that he uses for all the trick celica's and stivo's going through the workshop.. seem to outperform (and cost heaps less mind you!) a certain name in the industry known for putting out pretty good stuff for them..
few more pics i managed to dig up *glares at surface rust* that will be fixed real quick haha..
once the pipes are back from coating will post up some better pics
this weekend depending how we go, will be getting stuck into it a bit...

that is one sexy bellhousing
GL with the getting it running part, its always a bitch
Sweet project
I would be grabbing a Sierra 5-speed as mentioned, its basically the same as the 4-speed ratio-wise and will bolt striaght up to the bellhousing but with the additional cog so you can actually drive on the freeway at comfortable rpms or alternatively run a shorter ratio diff for performance
If you have the short throw gearshift in the 4-speed you can fit it to the Sierra box too (just needs a simple spacer)
Hacking the firewall in an Esky aint so bad, at least you can get into the heater bubble which always fucking rusts!
What year is the 'series 2'. Got an 05 Celica at home and it is definately cable throttle. 2zz engines after 03/03 had modifications to the head to allow for air injection (not all markets got air injections fitted though) and different lift bolts if thats what you are talking about.Originally Posted by Cuts
Interesting project non-the-less.
duno about the air injection on aus models, but the series 1 are 99-02 and 03-05 are series 2, the only thing i can assume is yours has either had a cable throttle put on it, and possibly an ecu swap too, or a whole engine swap.
and yeah lift bolts were changed for series 2, but most series 1 people change theirs to later model ones before they fail.
