best thing would to do would be to talk to an engineer about the modifcations and get it certified, otherwise it wont get over the pits

hey all.
my car (te71) is unregistered at the moment and when it goes to go over the pits it will have a 4agte in it. just a 20V with gze pistons so still 1.6
the motor that is registered in it is the old 2tgeu.
so im wondering what im going to have to do to get the inspectors not to rip at the turbo and 4a conversion. i cant see it being to bad to have the 1.6 factor still and being a newer model (better emisions) motor. and all the parts have bolted in with 86 front crossmember etc
so any ideas guys. in wa too obviously
cheers for any help

Get it registered then do the conversion. Otherwise it'll be a pain.

Craig,
You are in serious trouble...
Better emissions? Its definitely not a factory setup even in the remotest. How has it been tuned and on what ECU? Does it have closed loop control with correct targets? Do you have the specs/tests to prove it? Is the PCV system intact?
Is the suspension and brakes up to the task. Do you have the engineering tests and reports to prove it?
Does it meet all noise requirements?
Does it look like a shitbox and do you wear your baseball cap sideways? If so will you be wearing it sideways on the day of the inspection?
The advice of Rex is this; Ask the dept of transport in WA. they will tell you exactly what they want from you regarding the approval of your conversion.
Be afraid, be very afraid.

im not some idiot with hat backwards driving like a comma driver etc car will be resprayed standard colour all other parts standard. ive just never had to go over the pits before so dont know
anyways
would i have a better chance using a 100% standard big port just to get an A series motor registered in the car. then go to the 20V.
because i have one sitiing in the shed.
thanks

Good, leaving the baseball cap at home, and combing your hair will give you a fighting chance...
Conversion wise the authorities generally require a conversion to be almost entirely factory from an ECU/management point of view.
They accept that the manufacturers have to meet emissions legislation when a car is released so using the complete factory management and tuning should/will fit inside the tolerances.
Aftermarket ECU's require comprehensive emissions testing to prove compliance.
So basically what Rex means is this...
4AGE, 20V or S/C; an entirely stock conversion will be infinitely easier to get through emissions wise.
You're still left with the safety of the conversion from a brakes/suspension point of view.
Seriously give the transport/registration authority a ring. They'll be able to tell you exactly what they require from you.

I went over the pits twice now.
Once when I got a yellow on my AE86. It had the conversion form 4A-C to 4A-GE done, and went over no probs.
Second time was to get my T-18 rego'd. It went over piss easy again, they didn't check much apart from steering and oil leaks and windows, tyres and seatbelts.
Other than that I've got no other experience, but just try make the conversion as clean as possible.
Possible idea is get the engine regoe'd wid a 4age, and then after that change it over to the turbo engine.
Also, small question, do the TE71's have rack and pinion or do they run a steering box liek the T-18's?
TE71 runs a box like the T18, but easy enough to convert to rack and use an AE71 or AE86 crossmember. Swapping crossmembers gets around having to make engine mounts and if you do a tidy job they won't know the steering has changed (some of the steering box cars require no mods at all for a rack column to fit, others require the firewall changed).

yeah te71 has recurc ball but ive done the ae86 crossmember swap. went in very easy, actual bolt on affair in the engine bay. but the ke70 steering column needed plates to move the mount points. made the steering wheel sit about 15mm lower but with a longer boss kit it is very much like a gocart indeed. but yeah i think ill just register the bigport which shouldnt be too much of a mission and then just do the engine number change later to the 20V so that if i get inpected later down the track with the 20V the engine numbers will be right without having to go over the pits. well my theory anyway

so not worried about roadworthy/insurance being invalid?
how hard is it to get it approved properly?
