    Default VVT and Boost

Just curious to know whether anyone has done any experimenting with the adjustment of the VVT on the 4AGE 20V engine when turbocharged? I assume most people would not have this working if turbocharging the 20V engine but would like to know what effect it may have?
Has anyone actually done a dyno run showing the VVT in the off and on positions on a turbo 20V?

i havn't done it on a 20v but there are plenty of other engines around that have it and respond well to its use, later SR20's and RB25's use it and there is quite a difference in spool time between the 2 not to mention overall power production.

Im yet to find an engine that likes having the VVT or VVTi removed and its generally only done by the inexperienced.

    cheers

Can't remember if Bazda's 7AGTE retains VVT or not, I'd ask him personally. If his isn't functional, he'll still probably know someone who does or how to get it to work

Why didn't toyota do VVT on the Gen IV 3S-GTE? [/rhetorical questions]
1jzgte from 1996-2001 had VVTi. 3S was from 1997-2002 in that format.

Are the Gen IV GTEs based off the BEAMS or the Gen III 3SGE?

    cost vs emissions vs volume.
3S was slated to be phased out by end of ST246 due to emissions. 3SGTE was ONLY used in ST215/246 (around that time.. no more SW20).

1J/2J was used in a lot more models with much higher volume....

    Not a Toyota but as close to what I'm searching for;

If we could get something like this for the 20V I would love to see it.

the only scenario i can think of where you would want to, would be if your building an engine for a specific rev range and really dont care about the rest of it. i think it says a lot when you can find variations of VVT etc on every thing from your grannys echo to mr shumachers personal toys!

i reckon do what they did, two dyno runs, and set your VVT switch point where the plots cross over

interesting note, on talking to lynn rogers about the toyota race series engines (2zzge) i asked what they did with the VVTi-L lift switch point. he said they dynoed it with it off, then with it on and made it switch where the torque curves crossed. which was where the factory had set it.

I was of the belief that that is the only way to do it.

the only time this might change is if you can't map it in 2D (ie revs vs load) you sometimes need to move it to higher rpm as it may be right at a "cruise" rpm and cause jerkiness etc, but thats only if your using a shit ecu also.

What possible reason would anyone have for turning it off?? It's there, why not make use of it - unless you're running long enough cams to not be physically able to operate the mechanism.

It's possible the factory activation point might no longer be optimum going from NA to boost and various turbos, but it's not going to be very far off (with the factory cams of course). Then you just dyno and set.
