Default 4AGE Idling faster and faster..

    Hey
I bought a little ae82 twincam the other day.. and since i bought it the idle has been creeping up more and more until when i was on the way home yesterday it shot up to like 3000+rpm!!
Any ideas? I've checked the adjusting screw on the throttle body but that didn't help.

hmm i'm not sure if the ae82's suffer from the same problem as the mid mount aw11's, but if there's a coolant air bubble, maybe it thinks it hasn't warmed up. I doubt that there is much chance of this as the aw11's are prone to air pockets, ae82's are less prone to this sort of problem. Worth checking the cold idle up thing tho (sorry i don't have any pics of it atm)

Vacuum leak - check all hoses, sounds like it's getting extra air. Or the ISCV is sticking open, but i wouldn't expect that to gradually creep the idle over several days/trips. Sounds like a split vacuum hose.

Best way to check for vacuum leaks, is to spray some carby cleaner at any suspected hose or joint. If the cleaner gets sucked in through holes the engine RPM will change quite audibly.

    cheers Chuck.

^^^+1 for vac leaks. Most likely.

Might be worth checking that the dizzy is tight too. Changing ignition advance will change idle speed, perhaps not from 1000-3000rpm, but for the 2 seconds it takes to see if it's loose it's worth checking.

All good now. Took it to a Toyota specialists and they gave it a full tune up, there was quite a few things out of adjustment which must have all contributed to the high idle speed! If anything now its a little low.. lol

Not hard to turn the idle up

Good that they got everything sorted for you. What was it?

By your username you could be a girl, I hope they didn't do 10 minutes worth of work and charge you for 4 hours...

    Hey
Yes, i am a girl, but i also have a certificate 1 in automotive studies, and have been around cars my whole life, so they'd have a tough time ripping me off They adjusted timing, adjusted TPS, Idle speed screw (and added a locknut), idle mixture screw, checked all sensors and ran full computer diagnosis on it, all for around $170 so i'm pretty happy with that
