You need to check fluid level with the engine running (P or N) and pref with the trans oil hot, not sure if this is what you are doing?
Cheers

ok well, ill tell you this anyway seeing though your going to change the box by the sounds of it. Do you know about winding the convetor in before installing the gearbox?

if its not running the oil level in the pan will be higher so it must be running as wilbo said.
try putting it on axle stands and running it thruogh the gears abit before driving it on the road, that way it should have purged the system properly.
i thought A340's had clutches not bands? i could be mistaken though as i don't play with them often

whats the coaster weigh compared to the celsior?....could it be just too much load on the box?
As some of the boys have said the engine must be running otherwise you will get a false full level, Dont drive it if its slipping that badly ... Start it up & let the idle come down to a normal idle, engine still coldish, With your foot on the brake run through the Bus from park to 1st & back again pausing slightly at each gear, put back into park, remove dipstick clean & re-fit & remove again & read the level ( Bus / car must be on level ground obviously ) Even when cold the oil will still read on the bottom of the dipstick, but will be low on the dipstick, hot is more accurate but you need to by the sounds of it get some more oil in it, sooner than later ......
Hope that helps ...
Rob ..
Thanks all, checked oil with engine running when warm and seems it was still a bit low. I've added more oil and seems much better.
I think i'll get a service on the box though and get the proper Toyota oil put in and new filter etc. But for now it's not slipping.
Few other problems to iron out now.. Will start another thread
Thanks
Joel
Out of curiousity is the pan dead flat? I know with some conversions wierd angles are required.
Dexron 3 fluid is fine, the Toyota Type IV stuff will just give you a smoother shift.
What does the bus weigh?
If its over 4tonne then that might just be too much for a stock box.

There is a slight angle with the end of the gearbox being a bit lower than the front.. Not much of an angle though, 2 deg at most?
I think its around 3.5tonne empty.. Be interesting once its fitted out with the camper stuff.
I've never driven a 1uz before, expected it to go a bit better. But have to remember it is lugging around a coaster bus. WIthout a dyno though it is hard to know if it's lacking power or not.
Under 3k rpm with that weight she'll still feel like a slight.
Get it going from 3.5k to 5.5k with a decent amount of throttle (and assuming gbox is not slipping) and she should motor along nicely.

i towed a car and car trailer with my celsior the other day and it wasnt all that quick. id estimate the total weight of the combo to be around 3.5 tonne. it was doing alright for the weight and still accelerating to an acceptable level.
id compare it to a stock KE55 4K corolla roughly
hello
Maybe a manual conversion may help?
IF it was originally a diesel engine i would expect the diff ratio will be too tall
Nah a petrol, but still unsure of the ratio.. I need a tacho..
Change the filter asap , if you have slipped it more than a few klm then chances are the box is fubared now .
