Default solex carbie tuning and emissions- how hard to keep legal???

    Hi All,

I would like to know those of you who are good at tuning and know how to tune the solex carburettors which came on the 2tg engines, how hard it is to keep carbon monoxide exhaust emission output emitted by the engine under 4.5% when tested
at the manufacturers recommended engine idle speed??

is this possible with a carbie turbo setup or a high comp with porting and cams etc??

    or am i dreaming??????

    thanks for your help!!!

    Az

4.5% CO is quite coarse. If you can't get it below this you have a problem.

What would a car with carbies normally operate at?

    Thanks

It's a long time since I've looked up specs for carbies but I think it is usual to see them between 2% to 3%.

Yeah that's why I'm asking. If I got a 1970-73 celica an put a turbo or high comp big cam set up it's totally legal doesn't need to go through regency but has to keep the emissions to that level, cops can't defect!

Thumbs up Re: solex carbie tuning and emissions- how hard to keep legal???

As long as the mixture screws/seats are in good order. turn them GENTLY in

1 at a time until motor runs rough. Then back off a 1/8 - 1/4 of a turn - May need more?

Until motor runs smooth then back in just a tad.

Repeat on all 4 and adjust balance screw and idle screws as necessary.

That will give a not too lean setting to work from.

So if carbies are in good order with that tune or similar it should be under 4.5 CM levels?

    Thanks guys!

    these are all non issues...
    1. you dont own a ta22... think about that first
    2. when you buy one it probably wont have a 2tg in it
    3. if you get around to putting one in you definitely wont be turboing it through the stock solex carbs either...

    4. if you put big cams in it and port the head....just a note on porting the valves....

unless you do it yourself it is NOT a worthwhile value for money exercise unless you have done absolutely everything else possible - now say at the cheapest $40 a valve done at a workshop. 8 valves in the engine. thats $320....

and for what noticeable gain? very very little noticeable gain thats how much. for $320 you could purchase the necessary 3T crank/pistons (depending on if you go 2nd hand toyota stuff, the new aftermarket stuff is heaps more expensive) which would stroke your engine to 1770cc - an increase of 200cc which you WILL notice.

or better yet you could use it to purchase some EFI gear for your engine and do away with the solexs

anyway so you have big fat cams in your 2tg in your ta22... and its running solex carbs and it idles at 1500.... and is horrible to drive almost all the time.... and your worried about an emmisions test?

here is a tip - dont drive like an idiot, dont get pulled over by cops, dont treat them like rubbish, they wont ask you to open your bonnet, they wont defect you and then you dont ever have a test done.

anyway as to tuning your solex carbs... hit up roger with a PM when it comes to it, he is the carbs guru here and will probably be able to give you a few hints.

and if you do stick with carbs on your turbo 2tg, then it could be better going to a single carby set up....

Thanks for the big write up.

The tuning info was helpful will pm roger about it.

As for the other uneducated lecture, been there done that more than 10 years ago so I am very fimiliar with hybrid t engines, was after some simple facts about carbies tuning. Blow your trumpet elseware. I want it to be legal not just look legal by asking a general question for two engine type setups. That is all.
