That preload nut may well not be the problem mate. It could be any part of the setup.. I'd be pulling the center out and seeing where the problem exactly is.
My G series LSD has got too much slop for my liking, clunking everytime i change gear unless i'm VERY VERY gentle on the clutch.
Can the preload/nut on the diff flang be adjusted to take up some of this slop/excessive play? or when a diff gets like this does it have to be rebuilt/overhauled or best off to replace with a low km unit?

So there isn't really a common reason for this excess play? such as "yeah such and such is worn/out of adjustment".
Could be any number of reasons?
Reading on supraforums.com a ton of ppl complain about this diff slop, no doubt from constant abuse and accelerated wear.
Ah i hate taking my diff out >but looks like i will have to pull it apart and locate where the play is occuring. (really hate trying to lift up a g-series diff into place, fuggin heavy)
Still if anyone has something to add i'm all ears.

i think what you have is backlash. the way most live axle toyota diffs work, (being a front loader diff) is that there are 2 large rings that can move the centre in an axial direction.
these large rings are a little smaller than a donut and have threads on the outer edge which screw in/out to move the diff centre axially, ie. from LHaxle side to RHaxle side.
with this adjustment, the crown wheel can mesh with the pinion gear better .
so yeh, i think you need to loosen the bearing caps and then adjust the "adjusting nut" accordingly

Thats what i was thinking! backlash adjustments! Vague memory of how to set it properly from a toyota manual i no longer have.
Thanx for the link!

I would be looking into the backlash possibility, but be aware that when lsd hats are too far gone will make a very nasty clunk, particularly when changing gears. Had that problem with my boyfriends skyline after too many burnouts.... still held together thowell good luck, let us know when you find the problem, I am very interested in learning more about diffs.

hello
Thanks! Thats a really cool resource... I knew the basics of how it worked etc, interested in learning about analysing problems etc. They are a pretty basic concept. The pictures are cool tho!!

side gear & pinion/spider gear play controlled by thrust washer.
NOT the drive pinion.
Please do not F with backlash.

right you are then. Going to try this out on my spare diff first (which also has worse slop then my current diff)
Cheers all.
