Default How did you beat your tunnel. R154 into X83

Seriously, it feels like im not getting anywhere with beating the tunnel in my X83 for the R154. I need about another 1/2 inch of clearance between the crossmember and body and the engine is tilted back aswell. What have you guys used to manipulate the tunnel. Im using a lump hammer but im thinking that i will be looking for a damn porta power.

Cheers in advance for any suggestions.

i dunno if its the right way but we used a grinder to cut slits for the metal to bend then welded it back up

I'll be doing this soon (R154 into Z10).

I'll be starting with the ball pein hammer as above, and hoping it works (I'll be lying on my back)

I've heard of a few people cutting and welding a new plate in.
I've also heard of a few people using an oxy torch to make it all softer.
Both of these require the interior/carpet to be removed.

Unless the jzx81 tunnel is bigger than the mx83 its really not that hard

I used a ball pein hammer laying under the car took about 20 mins

10mins of that was getting dirt out of my eyes lol

Does anyone with a 1j in a series 2 with JZX90 mounts and JZA70 R154 have there harmonic balancer hit the front swaybar? I beat it some more and now the harmo hits the sway bar. Still need to beat the tunnel more though

I used an oxy and a metal mallet...

Once it was hot, the metal seems to run away from the hammer...

I had no carpet, but some of the cotton crap was still there, and all of the sound deadener... You dont have to heat it red hot, but its probably best to remove anything you actualy care about before you start heating!

I gather you've read all the info about using JZX90 mounts, but incase you haven't, they don't put the engine in the same position as JZX81 mounts. From memory you also have to swap L+R mounts when using JZX90 mounts, but thats stretching the memory, so it could be wrong.

Personally I'd spend the extra coin on getting proper JZX81 mounts and having the motor where it should be.

    Hi,

You'll find this only happens when you have the front wheels off the ground. When you drop the car back on the ground there will be a good 10mm + between the harmonic balancer and sway bar.

EDIT: Cruzida can think and type much faster than me. Even when using JZX81 mounts you'll find the sway bar and harmonic balancer will contact each other when the front wheels are off the ground.

    Cheers,

    Pete

Nope, with JZX81 mounts the swaybar doesnt interfere with the balancer at full droop.

    Hi,

It certainly does on mine. I'm using JZX81 Al. legs combined with JZA80 isolaters. My front sway bar is a 27mm K-Mac, so maybe the bigger front bar is the problem??

This image shows how much clearance there is when the car has all four wheels on the ground.

And now this shot shows the suspension at full droop which on my car results in the sway bar and harmonic balancer getting intimate.

Given that this is happening on some vehicles and not others it may just be due to differing suspension arrangements. My bar only just contacts the balancer on full droop so if you had less droop, i.e using coilovers, it wouldn't be a problem. Also if you were running the standard bar you'd still have a few mm of clearance........or just maybe my Kmac is cacky and has a weird bend to it??

Oh well guess that rules out General Lee impersonations in my cressie

    Cheers,

    Pete
