Default $500 budget for paddock racer

okay guys, me and a few mates have a little competition going.

we have set ourselves a budget of $500 to spend on getting a car and modifying it.

then we are taking these cars to an undisclosed location, and having a series of little comps.

well, ive pretty much purchased a ke70 corolla which is going to leave me with $300.

now. i was thinking of removing all interior and any hanging panels.

is their anything in the engine bay i could remove to gain some weight back?

also, i have a air filter laying around form a 4wd race car, would this be two big for the little 1.3?

also is their any cheap mods i can do to get this thing moving along?

ra23, that's where we got some of our ideas from. some of them where from drunken ramblings that seem to stick around once we sobered up.

you mite even get one that a/c works haha.

with the 300 left over, id look into cooling and bumper bars to stop the rad getting broke.

corona or KA70, but drive in reverse and shunt into your competitors radiators

Also remove the side window glass

If it's no-rules, then (dare i say it) get a VW bug - it has much more sturdy panels, is fairly difficult to roll over and easy (courtesy of its shape) to role back onto its feet.

definately v6 bombadore if you can snaffle one, even a half f@*ked one will still have the torque to blow the others away.

Ok well I have some first hand experience and have done something pretty similar to you. I bought three cars and none of them are running now but one was clearly the winner.

    The three cars were

BMW 318i or something like that
    141 Corona
    KE70

Now the BMW that lasted a whole of ONE night. They are seriously bogged down with useless crap that gets in the way of paddock basing. By the end of the night every diagnostic light was lit up on the dash, the fuel pump wouldn't turn off and I ripped the back of the sump. So much that I could fit my hand in the hole I ripped in it.

KE70. Its a great car and handles well except the carby died on ours the first night but the KE70 also has a few downfalls. First of all the diff is a piece of shit. We broke it on its second outing and as well the car is generally underpowered

Now for the corona. This is clearly the winner of the bunch. I can't speak highly enough of how well these things go as rally beasts. Admittedly the manual borg warner gearboxes are pieces of shit but with a little bit of wire that shift can be held in place for ever. The clutch was actually the first thing to go, which got replaced and then the starter. The thing ran for months though getting flogged around at max rpm with no oil change and a radiator clogged with mud. It finally died one afternoon after it spat a rod out the side of the block. The thing would go anywhere with a locked diff though and was great at jumping

    So corona FTW.

Commodores, R31s, volvos etc are all too big and heavy. You need to compromise power for weight Otherwise you'll rip the bottom out of some of those cars depending on where you take them.

haha we had a corona paddock basher that survived endless crashes. It was driven without a bonnet, with no air filter and with a spare wheel attached to the front to protect the rad. It survived about 3 months of rallying, running into trees (deliberate and accidental) and just general mistreatment before the carby died on us.

The only thing id rate higher for indestructibility is an old datsun. When we were about 17 a mate had one that we rolled in a field while being idiots, we got out, tipped the car back onto its wheels and then drove it home 50kms, engine turned over after about 2 seconds of cranking. About a year of daily driving later, the car got taken out to my old property, the diff was locked and it was thrashed for 2 years. We moved out from the property and the datsun was converted to LPG, was road registered and has been driven daily since.
