Default T50 from TA22 with ae86 short shift

    Hi!

    Since I upgraded my ta22 with a 5-speed box I'd like to add a quick/short shifter.
I know the ae86 uses a t50, and there are a lot of ae86 shortshifters for sale.

But will this fit, whichever version of the t50 I've got?
Coz I read somewhere that this wouldn't fit right in a celica.

Can anybody give me some info on this? Would be really helpful!

the 86 t-50 has a different shifter housing, so it wont work. custom might be the way to go. never seen a proper short shift to suit the ta22 t50...

    shifter housing? or shifter position?

I have a shortened T50 shifter off an AE71, now this was some time ago, but I seem to remember fitting it to my mates TA22 T50, and I thought it worked, but like I said this was like 5 - 6 years ago so I could be wrong.

if turns out to work, I'll sell you my shifter with Grex knob for $40

Different housing and location. 99.9 percent sure it won't fit.

im pretty sure my t50 is stock, the throw on the shifter is pretty much fuck all.... i dont know why you would want a short shifter, but give it a go, see if someone on ae86dc with a spare box/shifter you can try

    Thanks for the replys.

The shifter position doesn't really matter, does it? Because in the place where the normal shifter is right now, you can bolt on a short shifter in the same place.
    Or is that bad reasoning?

On the other hand, if the shifter housing is different than it all stops there..

The T18 t50 is 20 spline output but I'm quite sure suits an ae86 style shifter (from wrecker observation).
Might be something to check out if you are desperate to have a short shifter.

i thought the early boxes have the shifter bolt on flange thing at an angle, and the later are flat? so they don't bolt across?

    ie, early box

    late box

In that case I have an early box.
Isn't there any writing/markings on the box from which you can see what type of box you have?

For the record series 2 T-18s are a 22 spline, they both have the same rear housings though

i reckon that if you swap in the shift rods as well, you could swap shifter housings...

doesn7t help with shifter position tho.

it might be possible to use the stick part of the short shift, in the holder bit of the early box, and then space up the holder bit...

    worth a try.

The below pics are of a 22 spline T-18 box with the housing removed, as you can see its got a rod linkage that goes into the linkages out of the rear of the box rather than coming in from the top. I am not 100% but it may be directly interchangeable with the Ta22 housing without changing linkages. But it will put the shift location further back as old corollas said

i knwo on the K boxesm there are 3 totally different sets of linkages, which each use different shift rods. the rods themselves can (for the most part) be interchanged (onyl issue is reversing switch), so you can swap shifter positions.

when i looked at AE86 and TA22 T50's, the rods looks just as changable... but i haven't tried it yet.

You cannot use the AE86 short shift in the TA22 T50 simply due to the extension housings being much different. The shifter position is about 100mm forward on the TA22 compared to the AE86. The shifter itself is also much different between the two gearboxes. I have both and the AE86 short shift I have definitely will not fit the TA22 box. You can swap the extension housings but also need to swap the shift rods so the box will have to be dismantled to do so. I swapped the TA22 extension housing onto the AE86 T50 doing just this as I needed the shifter to be further forward in the vehicle. The only drawback is that I lost the short shift.

Resurecting an old thread here. I am considering putting an AE86 short shift onto the TA22 T50, reading this and other threads on here and elsewhere there seems to be a lot of conflicting info. Could someone who has actually done this please outline exactly what is involved. Or is there someone around that can modify or custom make a short shifter for the TA22 T50 box.

    Cheers
    Scott
