Question I have is, is there any harm in putting the engine in the front, transaxle in the rear?, clutch and bellhousing at the front still, tailshaft running from engine through to gearbox. Questions there I guess is how tough does your tailshaft need to be? obviously would need to be VERY well balanced too @8000rpm+... Aside from the obvious $$$ factor, what other engineering issues would there be?

Porsche 928 has front engine/rear trans axle.

Look for a transaxle with the gearset behind the axleline. They do exist, 80's F1 is an example, the input shaft runs over the diff and the gearset drives forward to the diff.

one of my dads mates got a complete gearbox made out of a chunk of ally about 8 or more years ago. It cost him 20k and you have to turn the car off to select reverse but it happily supports 650+hp at the wheels.
its a twin turbo gt40, i think it may be my dream car it even has aircon hahah.

but yeh be prepared to pay because most ns transaxles are weak or expensive.
i dont have a funny or cool signature.

No different to a standard tailshaft in 5th at 6000rpm

Alfa V6 also have gearbox (and clutch?) at the rear. A 'torque tube' takes rotational power from motor down to box. Am not sure if they use any uni joints of sleeves in the tube?

The alfa box is quite a largish/longish lump of alloy.

Yeah, alot of the newer big $$$ cars, like the Aston Martins, Fezza 599, Corvette etc have the front/mid engine, with rear gearbox... but I guess the question is more about retrofitting something like that to an older car...

Peewee - that's a good point, I guess worst case would be flooring the gas pedal in top gear (or overdrive?) that way the tailshaft sees maximum torque and revs....

mid mount RA = SWEEEEEEET !

Thought about that along with NS mounting a 1UZ in the trusty AW = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

ever see the Giocattalo was an old alpha sprint with a holden 308 mid mounted, bloody works of art, something like a 20k transaxle in those puppies and that was 15-20 years ago.

I love the idea but its going to need some SERIOUS engineering, assuming you want it to drive like a mid engined exotic.

The tourque tube is pretty much just that, a large tube used to connect the engine to the gearbox, it has a bellhousing on the engine end and runs a driveshaft/tailshaft through the guts to the transmission. they are also used to maintain proper alignment of the engine and transmission and as a result are fed "torque" through them by the 2 trying to spin opposite directions.

    Cheers

Found one company who makes adapters when looking at putting my spare 1UZ in an SW20 MR2. http://www.kennedyeng.com/vw_por.htm
edit: Just noticed the link posted much earlier.. whoops.

I'd be very interested in seeing a 1UZ MR2 setup. Still have the engine and car sitting around, just too much money needed for a strong Porsche transaxle.

I reckon the later model subaru sti, 6speed would be the way to go, can handle gd power ,and you can pick them up for around 3500$ in NZ,
