FWIW you can get electric air-con compressors - They don't use the engine drive at all.
I'm pretty sure the Mk2 Prius onwards uses them.

Hey all,
Wow, big response!
Cheers for all the input!
Currently no plans for regen, going to just get it up and running, see how battery life goes.
From talking to a few ppl, the regen controllers and the added cost / complexity make it hard to justify the gains.
Yep, Aircon is a must on this one!
Will just drive it from the main motor for the time being.
Costs, freekn huge, I dont really want to think about it now :|

I'm surprised at that weight of the Sera though. Is that dry weight?
EP81 Starlet would be interesting (for here where they weren't sold new).
But anyway, the car has been bought already.
Better than the Electric Rodeo (we think according to the stickers on it anyway, it was going so slow on the M4 that it was a joke) where they'd gotten a last model Magna sedan body & fitted that on instead of the tray
wondering something, once u run dry on your estimated 150km, how long to do you need to recharge the battery for another 150km?
This is awesome!

Mate of mine has had his 91 charade on road for over 2 years now, electric. Runs awsome, heaps quicker then the stocko 3 cylinder it had !
All up it set him back just under $7000 including respray.
What kind of vaccuum system will you use for the brakes ?

you could go non-vacuum brakes (with larger disks and maybe a little longer pedal throw )
what happens if you run out of charge on the road? can you like.. bring out a "jump-start" pack or something? or just use a little petrol/diesel generator to recharge it by the side of the road?
or is generator small enough to keep in car just in case?

Just bring a long enough extension cord with you, and sap free power out of the nearest power point
Really awesome to see people doing a project such as this.
I'd love to see someone incorporate the use of solar panels, for that little bit of extra charge when parked in the sun for a day etc. but I'm guessing a decent sized panel would either add negligable charge for a 40kw motor, or be too heavy/large.

electric car is awesome the only thing that in my mind about it is recharge system, ie how fast the battery pack can be recharge full?
Mates EM CHarade now has a range of 150km's . But he built it as a town car . Enough in it to go to the shops, friends, work. It hasnt been built for long distance . He has a Hyundai getz for that, lol.

Bloody awesome project, is there a reason for doing this besides curiosity/something that should be done because it can be ? Seems like a LOT of money to spending, wondering if you have a specific goal in mind ?
Oh, and GREAT choice of car, never seen a Sera before ! More exposure to Toyota models is a big win in my book !
Engine is out!
That was the easy part
My card reader broke though, so no new pics yet...
Dieseltrain
You got build pics?
Is he using LION cells?

My look at keeping a little generator in the boot (while determining actual range)
would be a pain in the ass having to wait for it to charge by the road though :|
I wonder what the RAC guy would say if I called for a tow.....
I also have a small vaccy pump + tank for the brake system, has its own pressure switch and reg, so no worries with them, its also a legal requirement for licensing.
CHB,
Charge time from 80% Depth of Discharge, looking about 8-10 hours with a 15A mains cord, could be faster if I forked out for a 50A 3phase charger
The whole project is getting rather $$$,
I still would like to re-spay the car & get some nice rims etc...(eventually)
