    Default 4K FWD Gearbox...? Anybody...?

    Hey guys,

I have searched like crazy but I cant find anything on the forums (or web in general) in regards to a Front drive gearbox that suits the 4K engine.

Does anyone know of a direct bolt on? 4AC maybe? Maybe I'm completely blind but I've had no luck...

And for those who think I'm crazy for wanting this, Im building an Auto Test Special and want to use a built 4K I have sitting in a KE70 I own, prob being that I cant run front mounted rear drive (well I can, but it will create class issues and also weight/ length issues)

    Any help would be great!

suzuki sierra???? i know they use 4k's as 'upgrades' to the stock engine, but i honestly haven't ever seen an East-West k-series engine.

PS. by 'blind' do you mean completly wasted??!

PPS. what is it for? do you need a FF car under 1.5L or something?

Hmm dont know might have to go have a look at a sierra...

No blind as in theres an obvious thread or web page and I just missed it.

Dont NEED an FF car, however once you start to run RWD Special you'll be up against Much more sofisticated MR powered carts, And running a FR chassis would put confusion into wether its a special based on a production car, which can run bigger engines, or RWD Special which again is too much money/ effort.

I am ocnsidering selling the Ke70 with the 4k and just buy an old twinky and use that running gear but efi makes things alot more complicated...

    Thanks for the suggestion!

i'd suggest getting a twinky over having ANYTHING powered with a 4k.

you could put twin sidedraught carbies onto a 4age, but for the time, effort and $ in getting them, you could've spent that much more wisely on an aftermarket ECU and dyno tuning. and once it's done, it done for good (unless the ECU shits itself)

    Don't K series Starlets run a 2K engine? I'd be looking there.

Oh right, I just assumed they would be similar to the E series. My bad.

To be honest, for an auto-test special with no weight Rex'd just run down to the locale 'u-pull-yourself' and grab a complete excel driveline.

They're not underpowered but they are cheap, EFI, common and reliable as a donkey!

Haha I actually have an excel im about to build into a excel series rally car but I am thinking of ripping it apart instead...

Only problem is Im not sure how well I would go with transplanting all required wiring for the efi etc. I can do mechanical work, I can wire things up, but 'systems' are harder for me to understand sadly Hmm maybe I will just have to work it out.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, appreciate it!

wow, a few ppl have no idea in this thread

easiest way would be to make an adaptor plate between the K and say, a C5x from 4A powered FWD corolla.
have not heard of a FWD box for K.
    KP6x starlet is 4K, publicas had 2K, corollas had K, 3K, 4K...

Yep, probably cost you $200 at a CNC machinist, cheap as if you've got a drill press and are handy with a grinder. Use a 5K (200mm) or 7K (212mm) flywheel so you can get a clutch plate off a 4AGE bigport or smallport repectively to be compatible with the input spline of the box. Will need some custom extractors to wrap under the sump too.

If you've got a 1500CC restriction I think a 3A-U might be worth tracking down. FWD factory and twin carbs with 12 valves, a regrind cam and I bet it'd go like a beast.

The EP70 series of Starlets had FWD and I think K series engines.

I can't see any way it'd be worth doing a 4K to east-west conversion. There are plenty of other options which are already E-W. Namely 4AGE, 3A, 4E, 5E, plus other makes.

It could definitely be done, but I'm sure it'd be more expensive by the time the car's running.

Also don't worry too much about the electrics side of it, if you can wire things up then you can cope with EFI. No more complex, just more wires to connect.

    E = engine series, P = chassis
KP = K motor, last of the RWD starlets (like yours)
EP = E motor, all EP are FWD
