STA wire taps off your starter trigger wire from the barrel. Lets the ECU know when the engine is cranking.

engines will still start and run fine without it. I connect it on my conversion looms though.
Helps with the first crank enrichment etc.
I did connect it on my blacktop conversion but thanks for clearing it up.

from wat i hear with BT if the sta wire isn't hooked up on WOT it will bog down

They've probably messed something else up in their wiring then.
PS, it's pretty easy to make a blacktop ECU register knock and retard the timing in the top end if you're not running 100ron fuel. I've personally confirmed this on a couple of engines with a snapon scanner.
