Question What engine would be best for my 86 Commuter

Any suggestions on what would be the best way to go on engine upgrade for my 86 Hiace. Currently has a 2Y, looking at the chinese copies 4Y, anyone heard good/bad reports on these. Have an 18R-C which is supposed to be in good order. Going to be camper hopefully. Not in to speed, just reliable, get from here to there. Is it possible to replace petrol for diesel??

Have seen everything from 3y/ 4y to18rg or 7m in these, even seen a 304 chev in one. They also came with a diesel variant. I`think either a 2L or 2b or the 3 l or 3b so anything is possible. Main consideration is budget. For a camper I would look at a transplant from a diesel hiace of the same year as easiest option.

i recently installed one of them chinese copy 4y's from rolin imports for my dads yn57 hilux 2wd. so far im impressed, although we're still in the run in stage. the conversion was pretty straight forward, didnt have to 'reengineer' anything. just swapped everything over and went. even the sump fitted.

dads impressed with the way it goes, although all he has to base this on was an unopened 450,000km old 3y

    I did a 4Y-E into my folks 85 Hiace (3Y-C) last year.

Pretty straight forward job. Though still took me ages because of little issues and so on. Being a van made things a bit of a pain, and intake piping and fitting the AFM was very tricky to fit in.

The result is great. Never will it be a drag car, but has heaps more useable torque all through the revs. And most importantly my mum noticed the extra power and says it's easier to drive.

I'm in Melbourne, so let me know if you want to take a look at it (though it is a camper too and is down the Prom for a couple of weeks)

I need a working 4AGE bottom end. Pref smallport GZE, but all others considered. Also complete motors.
Drift Volvo. Was fun. 2JZ next time.

Thanks everyone, still left me plenty to think about though. Might go for the easy option, 4Y for the 2Y, supposed to be a straight swap over. Would I need a bigger radiator? The one i have is stuffed anyway. The 4Y-E might do some research on whats involved.
