Rear diff braking setup ae86 with g series

Hey guys ive got an ae86 with a g series diff in the rear from a hilux.. I am running r31 calipers and 5 stud rotors machined to suit Atm These calipers are crap for e braking so i am wanting to upgrade to a caliper with an internal drum handbrake setup.. Anyone got some ideas, or know how on what setup i could possibly use to suit the hilux diff housing ? I am wanting the rears to lockup whilst trying to handbrake.

All hilux owners ,how would you say those 10" drums compare for locking up the rears for skids ?? my main objective is skids and track days.. I run 4 piston brake at the front and wanting big braking capacity in the rear of my ae86..The r31 are awesome for foot pedal but wont lock only slow you down so i want the abilibty to usethe e brake

im thinking thats a proportioning valve issue. fit a rear brake bias and adjust it to suit.

This is to do with handbrake cable ... And the shit house r31 handbrake cable setup i am running atm .. Reason for wanting handbraking to lock the rears

i had a chat with my brake guy about the internal drum setup and how good it would be for drifting and his answer was there are alot of moving parts in an internal drum mech that can brake and cause dammage. (theres 4 little springs that i can remember). thats from a brake specialst that i trust but in saying that the drums are huge and im sure they would lock up with the right cable eg new one

While not having direct experience with the bits discussed here, I wouldn't write off internal drum handbrakes altogether. I have an MS112 diff in my Sprinter with stock discs and internal drums. It all works perfectly, brakes work well and the handbrake locks the rears nice and easily.

So they can work. Whether they will in your case depends on which bits you use.

would it not be easier to switch to a hydro hand brake rather than changing the rear brakes all together?

Those internal drum setups are pretty weak! They are good for stationary clamping but a certainly not designed or strong enough for what you have in mind.

The pins holding the shoes are piss weak compared to what is used on a full time drum setup.
Most internal drum setups dont even have locating pins for the shoes which makes matters even worse.

If you have the R31 calipers on there, a bolt on upgrade is the commodore vr/vs caliper. These bolt striaght on (might need slight spacing with a washer) and have a hydraulic hand brake, might be just what you are after.

The added advantage is the the pistons do not screw out like the r31 do, so much easier to change pads

hmmmmm correct me if im wrong but the vr vs has internal drum hand brake...... i have adjusted enough of them to give me nightmares.

Apologies you are correct, they do fit (bolt on) but as 30psi 4agte states they are internal drum.
