    Default Changing 1GGTE Head Gasket

    Hey all,

Well after a TK test this arvo, it would appear that some of the problems I'd been having ever since I got my car on the road were related to the fact I had a BHG, which corresponding with my 17psi love from my eBoost2, the ~19yo factory gasket decided it'd had enough. It's never overheated on me, but lately it's been using a bit of coolant, and it drops onto 5 cylinders quite often, and the popping at idle has gotten worse.

The plan is at this stage to keep it as a simple swap. Get a new factory head gasket, take the head to be checked for warpage, and providing it gets the AOK, slap it all back together.

    Question time.
    1) Can I re-use my factory head bolts, or should I get some new ones?
    2) Any tips or tricks, I'm mechanically adept, but this is a first time head gasket repair.
    3) What special tools am I going to need? I've got a torque wrench, and a full 1/2" socket set, along with a 3/8" socket set, and ring and cresent spanners, screwdrivers etc.
    4) Am I missing something?

Also, I'm going to have a look around, I might have it on a CD somewhere, but does someone have the torqueing order and values for putting the head back on, just while i'm looking.

    Cheers,
    Nathan

The tools you have should be OK, but be careful when getting the gasket off that you don't damage the aluminium. Also, get a big oilstone and rub both faces gently before putting the head back in, it helps the sealing. If you can get an ARP bolt kit, do it. Well worth it, they'll hold torque much better than the factory bolts (which may be knackered anyway). Apart from that, if you're getting the head checked/machined anyway that side will be OK, while you've got it apart check for corrosion and suchforth...and check anything else that's easily replaceable. Good time for a new timing belt etc too...

Timing belt was only done about 6000km ago, so that's staying. I'll have a look around for an ARP bolt kit. The car has to be on the road again ASAP, so we'll see what I can dig up.

The factory bolts you have should do the job... that is if they have only been torqued the once. ARP don't make head bolts for a 1G.. Toyota can sell you new bolts if you wish... I have been told there is one particular ARP bolt/stud you can use, but I havn't seen it first hand, so I won't say which ones they are.

You will also need a 10mm hex socket (Allen key) for the head bolts. Most tool places will be able to help you with an impact style socket for a reasonable price.

The rest of the job is mainly common sense if you have a sound mechanical knowledge.

I will try and find the torque sequence for you and the torque settings also. I have a copy of the workshop manual here... I think they may also be on the packet for the head gasket too.

Incase you didn't know tighten in this order and in three stages (not sure how many head bolts the 1G has)

    9 7
    3 5
    1 2
    6 4
    8 10
    Front

Make sure you get a good quality 10mm hex key/socket as I used an allen key for some head bolts before I twisted the shit out of it on a 7M =I

If you get a new head gasket, it should come with the sequence and torque settings in the box. Also if you need parts like that, or head bolts, let me know, I get trade at coventries, it's about 40% off.

I think it's always been blown, because the symptoms I've got now have always intermittently been there, only now it's gotten worse and they don't go away I think it's blown between the coolant passage and the #5 cylinder, but i'll have to wait till it comes off.

I've got no idea on the history of the bolts in there. I don't know if they've ever been changed. I've got the head gasket lined up, but by chance if you'd be able to get me a price on the head bolts that'd be good.

It might be an idea for me to see if there is an ARP replacement I can measure up once I pop them out.

Yeah I just went out to the shed about 5 mins ago (before I actually read your post) to check and reply back that it was an 8mm hex... Sorry about that, I must have had a mind blank last night... Been workin with nissans abit lately and most of them are 10mm hex.

Head bolt torque tension is also 47ft-lb, 64Nm.. Do this in at least 3 stages in the sequence that is shown above by d-master.

    Say 12Nm, 36Nm, then 64Nm.

where did u get ur HG from? i got a bhg, some light markings in the cylinders, and glazing. but no real harm there. i think the rings should be fine, so im just gonna replace the hg, test from comp, and if its sweet. then im just gonna wak that in untill it goes pop...

while i wait for the big bang, ill build a better motor to go in...

i just hope the bottom end is sweet ahahah
