    word !
no, just your china rockstrainer isn't oiled?

the foam degrades due to oil and petrol and heat etc... is just a matter of time.

Cotton filters aren't much chop either.

Top side. This side is closest to AFM. Looks orright, aye?

Flip it over, and then you see this.

Fluff. With grit and grime embedded into it.

This $120 A'pexi filter was in the car for the last 4 months or so, and about 6-7K kms. The airbox was attached to a CAI that fed from behind the foglight. Apparently the airfilter has a life of 100,000 kms. That's right. One hundred thousand kilometres.

Needless to say, I'm now running a Paper air filter now. Sometimes, more expensive isn't necessarily better.

Looks like a Cheap $30 Paper pod filter will be the more reliable than those expensive foam filters.

K&N filters have worked beautifully for me for all the ones I've ever had (panel and pod), worst I ever saw was a rather small sized filter get dirty really quickly but that's understandable since it was an undersize filter. The good thing about them is they have a metal mesh on them as well to stop the filter element coming apart ala the Apexi one above.

According to the articles I've read thus far K&N panels do very well (especially versus cheap paper filters) and the butt dyno seems to agree. Maybe just my good luck so far?

Oiled cotton like K&N doesn't fluff, but could hurt a MAF sensor. However for any non hotwire/hotfilm meter equipped engine it's all good.

For MAF I guess no options remain but paper, which isn't bad if the housings flow well.

Don't trust the butt dyno on intakes, take pressure readings post-filter to see if you need an "upgrade" at all.

your complaining because it is catching grit

the better the filter, the more shit its going to catch

maybe you should use stainless steel mesh so you dont get grit?

Agreed, it's like complaining the end of your dinger is full of jizz when you're finished with it.

I had a Unifilter foam pod and it showed nil signs of degradation after 7 years or so.

Similar story with good quality dirt bike filters, high end filters costing around the $30.00 mark.
5 years of sand, grit, dirt, uber fine dust and dozens of turpentine baths and oilings with no signs of degradation to the foam or any of the glued seams.
And most importantly, never a dust particle on the clean air side.

Maybe the filter in question had some heat lovin' in the past?

It isn't that bad. It is only an issue if the filter has been over oiled. Otherwise give the MAFS a clean every service. Plenty of people with ZZ- series engines haven't had issues with MAFS and oiled filters.

As for that Apexi filter, my OEM filter did something similar.

please tell me avante was being sarcastic? After 4 months of driving my filter would have loads more crap lodged in it... though dunno bout the fluff? run into any animals lately? If the fluff is being generated by the element itself, perhaps you've sucked in some abrasive grit.

My experience with HKS foam is it that it does fall to pieces like the majority of foams used in older cars - looks fine, then poke it and it crumbles! It's probably part of the design intent, if they made it last forever, you wouldn't have to fork out for a replacement filter element every few thousand k's, therefore you wouldn't be continually giving them money for something that costs them 0.1 cents to make. Oh, and from what i've seen, they're a fairly open foam, and hence larger particles get sucked right through. Not as bad as mesh though...

With filters like Unifilter brand, they do tend to last for a very long time, you only end up buying new ones cos they get so clogged with crap (cos you went too long without cleaning it), or you want it to look nice and new.

Thanks for the replies... real intellects here.

Was just indicating that for a $120 filter, for it to have deteriorated so much, was disappointing to say the least. Yeah, its got grit in it, thanks to a CAI that was facing the front of the car, and yeah, the car saw some speeds...

Especially when a $10 paper filter did IMHO a BETTER job, and the reassurance that when TEH FILTAHH does get dirty, I can chuck it out.

If my 3rd grade maths still serves me correctly.... $10<$120.

can you circle the deterioration in the picture please cause from what we see there is none, nada, 0% deterioration, it just looks like it needs a blow out with an air compressor and its good again
