    Default Oil Question?

Is it always best to go with manufactures specs. Say like My 2001 turbo Sportivo it says 10-30w. Should I always use that or go 5-50w? I change the oil at every 5000kms.

    Hi,

Stay with the recommended oil as specified by the manufacturer. The recommendation is for that particular engine, driven under normal conditions etc.

If you were driving your car in the Sahara desert or the Antartic then you might need a different oil. Similarly, if you're racing your car you may need a different oil. However, as mentioned, for normal driving use what is recommended.

If you're changing it that regularly, just stick with the 10-30w as it'll probably be cheaper than the 5-50. Unless you're having problems with the 10-30? Just make sure it's fully synthetic as well.

and, of course, as the engine gets older you may need to go thicker.

and when the engine gets its little titties worked off, something a little thicker can be good too (eg: if you wind up the boost a lot, some 10w40 wouldn't hurt for you).

I know 5-50w is dearer and if I could afford that. Should I then just stick to that?
Of is it a case of wasting money and something like full synth 10-30w or 10-40w is more than good enough?

Toyota specify 10w30 becuase the tolerances are so small! i would use the 10w30 sythetic. And i wouldn't like to know what the oil pressure would be like with a 50 wieght oil on a newish engine suited for a 30 weight.
