    Default 1G Turbo Tech

There seems to be allot of theory's and rumour about the factory turbo's on the 1G-GTE.

In the early hours of this morning Ben and I thought it might be a good idea to strip down the 3 rooted pairs of 1G turbo's that were lined up on the shelf beside me. (You know how its gets after midnight, things seem like a good idea at the time lol)

The 3 sets of Turbo's I have all have different sytles of actuators and also have different casting numbers on the turbo compressor covers. I cannot say for sure what series 1G they all come off except for the Gen 3 set. However it doesn't see to matter.

    Set 1 - Theoretically Series 1 1GGTE - As removed from Josh - EMP's first 1G.
Compressor covers are numbered 3 & 5 respectivly.

Set 2 - Most likely Series 2 1GGTE - As donated to the Cause by Dennis - Grimboy.
Compressor covers are numbered 5 & 7 respectivly

Set 3 - Gen 3 1G-GTE Turbo's. - Donated to the cause by SSS Automotive.
    Compressor covers have C1 & C2 respectivly

    Actuators

The wastegate actuators are what suggests which series of Turbo's are which. Anyone able to confirm the series of either turbo set please do. I have labeled the actuators in the pic below to make things easier.

The actuator on the left is deffinatly a Gen 3 1G-GTE item. All of the ones here have the same red dot on the centre of the actuator. The preload on the Gen 3 Turbo's was quite tight. Allot more than the "Gen 1" actuators. Ben measured the length of the actuator rods, From the base of the actuator to the furthermost inside edge of the hole for the actuator flap pin. Measurements are listed in the pic.

Once I get a chance I will measure the opening pressures of each of the 3 actuators and update this post.

    Exhaust Housings & Wheels

All 3 set of turbos seem the same. All of the exhaust housings share the same casting number and appear to be identical. The exhaust wheels also measue the same in every dimension. (At least with my verniers anyway)

And just to confirm, The exhaust wheels are STEEL So boost is your friend. We forgot to write down what size they were as the intent was to see what the differences were and hey.. It was early. If I get enthused I'll measure one again and update this to suit

Edit - Exhaust wheel is 52mm at the base and 38mm at the top.
    Wastegate flap is 25mm.

    Compressor housings and wheels

Here is where it all gets very interesting. The "Gen 1" & "Gen 2" compressor housings seem to be the same, just different casting numbers on the outlet. The "Gen 1" and "Gen 2" compresor wheels also measure up to be the same size. (Keep in mind these are assumed to be "Gen 1" and "Gen 2" turbos. Could be both from the same Gen of 1G-GTE for all I know.)

The Gen 3 Turbo's however are visibly different and even more so on the Compressor wheels. You can see in the pics that the Gen 3 Compressor cover has a much larger Tapered inlet into the housing.

This is not all show as the comparrison below clearly shows just how much bigger the compressor wheel is in the Gen 3 turbos.

More detailed pics of the Turbos are located here.
So now what I want to know is who has a set of the "Blitz Bag Turbos" they can measure up to add to the facts collection ???

Try measure the bolt hole spacing between each compressor cover. The gen3 item is further spaced apart from memory... not sure how much by. I think it'll be around 5-10mm.

    Hydra,

Your right. The bolt spacing is different.

Quick measurement has the Gen 1/2 at 58mm bolt spacing (Outer edge to outer edge) and the Gen 3 Turbo's at 62mm so 4mm in round figures.

The feed pipe to the Gen 1/2 Turbo's is 32mm ID, I haven't got a spare Gen 3 pipe to measure.

Doesn't JCMOrlando have Blitz turbos on his 1G?

Clearly the metroman needs to get dirty, so he should be made to remove the turbos and post up the specs

Haha, your chances of me removing said hunks of metal are somewhere between slim and no fucking way. The last time I had them off I swore they would only come off again for something better to go on.

They do have the same inlet as the Gen1/2 turbos, but i've got no idea of whats going on inside them.

Oh and Rod, as for the Gen3 feed pipes, remember that they are also much fatter, they aren't round like the earlier ones.

Took a road trip over to Nathans on Saturday night and measured one of his spare Gen3 1G-GTE turbo feed pipes.

39mm Thats a massive 7mm bigger ID than the Gen 1/2 pipes.

Looking at his pictures, and given his engine was a Gen3, I think KirK has Gen3 inlet pipes. As far as I know, all BAG turbos were based off Gen1/2 turbos. I wonder how well they line up.

Here's my Blitz's the PCD of the holes is slightly larger than the Gen3 ones, and the outely port is smaller than the Gen3's so maybe they were designed for Gen2's ??

Note the paint where I face matched the flanges

And the Blitz come in a very smart wooden box
